Self-Check (pp. 9)

1.) The cell is considered as the structural and functional unit of life because all living
organisms are made up of cells.
2.) Eukaryotic cells are cells that possess a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles and
are found in protists, plants, fungi and animal while Prokaryotic cells are cells without a
nucleus and usually possess few organelles. Examples of Prokaryotic cells are bacteria
and archaea and protists, plants, fungi and animal are examples of Eukaryotic cells.
3.) Viruses are not considered as a living thing because they are just nucleic acids
surrounded by protein.
4.) 1. Flagellum 2. Pili 3. DNA 4. Cell Membrane 5. Ribosomes 6. Cell Wall 7. Capsule

Self-Check (pp. 10)

1.) It would be an advantage for a cell to have membrane-bound organelles because they
offer several advantages to eukaryotic cells. First, cells can concentrate and isolate
enzymes and reactants in a smaller volume, thereby increasing the rate and efficiency of
chemical reactions.
2.) The primary function of the cell membrane is to provide protection for cell. It also
provides a fixed environment inside the cell, and that membrane has several different
functions. The 3 structural characteristics of the cell membrane are: (1) they keep toxic
substances out of the cell; (2) they contain receptors and channels that allow specific
molecules, such as ions, nutrients, wastes, and metabolic products, that mediate cellular
and extracellular activities to pass between organelles and between the cell and the
outside environment; and (3) they separate vital but incompatible metabolic processes
conducted within organelles.
