100% Online CELTA _ IH Guayaquil _ Course Overview

Course Overview and Components

IH Guayaquil is offering a 6-week CELTA course in which all components are delivered online. The course starts on July
10th, 2021 and ends on August 21st, 2021. This course results in exactly the same CELTA certificate as a traditional
course. Please review the below excerpt taken from Cambridge’s official website:

Will the fact that I’ve taken CELTA Online appear on my certificate?

No. CELTA Online leads to exactly the same certificate as the face-to-face CELTA. Assessed outcomes are the same
for all trainees, so there is no need for separate certification. Courses are assessed locally. The assessor observes
teaching practice and has access to online materials.

Online CELTA courses have been offered by Cambridge for a long time as a way to make the courses more assessable.
Due to the global pandemic, Cambridge have allowed for a few adjustments to the online option to ensure individuals
can earn the CELTA while remaining safe.

The current format of the Online CELTA consists of the following components.

• Online units are used to deliver the input of the course that provide teachers get both practical and theoretical
teaching knowledge. Online units are delivered via the Cambridge online platform with tutor support. There
are a number of units of online, interactive material based on the CELTA syllabus topics. In addition, forum
tasks are integrated throughout the course. Teachers work independently or collaboratively on these tasks,
with tutor support, evaluation, and comment. You can access the online material at any time, giving you the
flexibility to plan your CELTA work.

• Live training sessions are held throughout the course via Zoom, a video conferencing tool, in which the
online units are reviewed, and up-to-date online teaching technique is modelled and practiced to meet the
needs of teachers. These are held on Saturdays from 15:00 to 17:00*.

• Teaching Practice (TP) and Feedback (FB). Teachers will complete 6 hours of assessed teaching practice via
Zoom and teach at least eight times with live feedback and reflection. This is the component of the course
that has been adjusted due to the pandemic. Previously, the teaching practice on Online CELTA courses was
done in a face-to-face setting. Cambridge has approved for live teaching practice to be done online. You will
be required to teach and participate in feedback twice a week.

This element of the course is done from 18:00 to 21:00*. IH Guayaquil reserves the right to select the day in
which your teaching practice takes place. The teaching practice schedule will be arranged before the start of
the course so you can plan accordingly.

• Assisted Lesson Planning (ALP). In support of each teacher’s teaching practice, tutors will assist them with
lesson planning to provide guidance and maximize their performance. This will be carried out thought private
live sessions on Zoom. Teachers are required to submit extremely detailed lesson plans as part of assessment.
The meetings will last 20 minutes and will likely be held sometime between 11:00 and 12:00* a few days
before the teaching practice occurs.
• Assignments. There are four written assignments. They are very practical in nature and relate directly to what
you will learn in the input sessions. Even though these are managed through the Cambridge platform, teachers
will be given support by tutors.

• Tutorials. Teachers will be given written and verbal reports of their progress at every stage of the course, so
they are completely aware of their development and have a clear understanding on what they need to
improve on to maximize their performance.

• Observations. A primary role of tutors is to model best practice by demonstrating how to successfully
implement the methodology being taught on the course. To achieve this, teachers observe live teaching and
recorded lessons.
