Lesson Idea Name: All About Giraffes
Content Area/Grade(s): 1st-2nd grade
Content Standard Summarized: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Technology Standard Addressed: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool: Sway

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): N/A

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): During this lesson, students will be creating a Sway presentation based
off of a safari animal and all of the different facts and information of this animal. Students will work in pairs to
assure they have found all of the most accurate and correct information. Creating a Sway presentation is a
very hands-on activity with a lot of interactive moments which will keep students engaged in their learning.
The use of voice over and captions also allows for multiple ways of understanding and showing knowledge
which is a great way to accommodate all students in this learning process. Students also have the ability to
customize their Sway by using different features, pictures, and their own voice in their presentation which
makes the learning very personal in how they choose to express what they know.
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will view the Sway I have created as a classroom sample of what they will be completing. The topic is
Safari animals so students will be paired up and asked to pick an animal. Students will then explore Sway and
all of the features it offers and begin their research on their specific animal. With their partner, they will
create a presentation with pictures, texts, audio, and videos, if they chose, to demonstrate what they have
learned. Students should try to include as many different features and functions in their presentation that
Sway has to offer. We then will view all these presentation with the entire class. Students will be asked to
create higher order thinking questions for their classmates to answer after the presentation is over. This will
help engage the class and promote students learning by having them come up with questions. This will
conclude the lesson.

As stated above, students will present their presentations within the class. This will help students to gain a
better understanding of the knowledge on the presentation as well as a way for students to show and be
proud of the product they have created. This will help support students learning because they now have
learned about another tool they can use on future presentations that allow for interactive activities.
