Semester: Spring 2021 Max Marks: 20 marks
Date: 17th May, 2021 Time: 90 Min
Instructor: Asst. Professor Tauseef Ahmed
Instructions:
• This OHT (One Hour Test) has two parts.
• Attempt all questions in proposed time for each part.
• This exam carries 20% weightage towards the final evaluation.

Name: Reg. No.

PART-1
CLO-1 PLO-2
(10 Marks)
(a) For a viscously damped vibration system defined as

1. m = 5 kg, c = 10 N-s/m, k = 500 N/m

2. m = 10 kg, c = 200 N-s/m, k = 1000 N/m
3. m = 20 kg, c = 250 N-s/m, k = 2000 N/m

Analyze the type of damping offered by the mass-spring-damper system (3 marks )

(b) A simple model of a Single degree of freedom

vibration system, that can vibrate in the vertical
direction only has been shown in the figure below.
Find the total response of the system subject to an
external force 𝐹(𝑡) whose magnitude is 180 N and
frequency of exciting force is 8 rad/sec. The mass-
spring-damper system consist of mass 8 kg, a
stiffness, 3500 N/m and damping constant of 38 N-
s/m and subject to the initial conditions 𝑥0 = 0.1 𝑚
and initial velocity 𝑥̇ 0 = 0.

CLO- 2 PLO-4
(10 Marks)

Q-2 (a) (4 marks)

A mass m (take any suitable value )is attached to beam through a flexible cable. The elasticity of
48𝐸𝐼 𝐴𝐸
the beam has been modeled as 𝑘𝑏 = 𝐿3 and for cable 𝑘𝑠 = 𝐿 . Find the natural frequency
of the SDOF system.

Beam:
L = 3.1 m,
E = 200 × 109 N/m2
I = 3.5 × 10–4 m4
Cable:
E = 200 × 109 N/m2
r = 10 cm
L=9m

Q-2 (b) (6 Marks)

The slab of 10 kg as shown is displaced by 20mm and

released. The reduction in amplitude is 1.5mm per
cycle What is the damping force and the coefficient
of friction between the slab and the surface?
