Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Angles Relationship

Content Area: Geometry
Grade Level(s): 9th Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on
the undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes
more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To reach my universal Design for learning, I used Bubbl.us in this lesson. Bubbl.us is a mind map
and online brainstorm. I can create colorful mind maps to print or share with others by using
Bubbl.us. In this class, to help all students to understand the relationship of angles, I used purple color
for complementary angles which meant their total would be 180 degrees. I used green color for all
angles their relationship would be congruent which meant their degrees are equal. In this case, using
different color to show angles’ relationship was a perfect choice. Because angles formed between two
parallel lines which are cut by a transversal line, some are complementary, some are congruent. Their
relationship became very clear by using different color on Bubbl.us. I reached 3 principles of
Universal Design for learning very effectively by using Bubbl.us.
Lesson idea implementation:
To connect with previous knowledge, I used the definition of angle to introduce angles relationship. I
drew two linear pairs and two vertical angles, asked students to figure out what their relationship was.

Then I drew two parallel lines and let these two lines cut by a transversal line, then I could create
many different angles. I asked them to use prior knowledge to figure out their relationships. I
observed that some of the students used table to identify the angles relationship.

When students realized that some angles relationships had crossed each other, it was good time for me
to introduce a new tool to them which was Bubbl.us. They were so excited when they found out the
different colors could clearly identify some crossed angles’ relationship. For example, vertical angles
were congruent, and in two parallel lines, alternate interior angles and corresponding angles were also
congruent. How could we identify them clearly? We all agreed that using different colors should be a
great idea. I asked them to use 2 minutes to put this angles relationship Bubbl.us map in their brain. I
assessed them by using DeltaMath exercise, most of them got 85 percent correctly. I define that this
class was a successful one.
Reflective Practice:
After this lesson idea designing, I feel it is very important to lead students to approach a new
technology instead of simply telling them. When they drew the table about the angle’s relationship,
they found out that it would be very helpful to use different color to identify the angles relationship.
This makes me think that it will be better idea if I could let them to do a Desmos activity first before I
introduce Bubbl.us to them. This could foster their creative thinking and help them to reach a higher
level of Bloom’s level.
