Introduction
This report presents a forced torsional vibration analysis of the engine-compressor drive train detailed below.
Predicted system responses are compared to allowables to assess drive train adequacy for torsional vibration
under the operating conditions of eleven load cases submitted by the customer as presented in Table 2.
Engine Rated Speed & Load: 2500 BHP @1200 RPM, 176 psi BMEP

Conclusions
This drive train, as defined in the Introduction section above, is approved for torsional vibration under the
eleven load cases submitted by the customer as shown in Table 2.
Recommendations
As stated herein, the KBK/4 compressor must be fitted with an Ariel internal damper Part #D7873 to properly
control the auxiliary drive amplitudes.

Analytical Model
Table 1 lists the mass-elastic diagram (MESD) of the analytical torsional vibration model. This drive train has
two engine dampers where, in the model, both seismic rings are modeled separately but the damper housings
are lumped together. The Rexnord-Thomas CMR 700 coupling mass and stiffness calculations are shown in
Appendix A. The compressor mass-elastic data and compressor excitations of the eleven load cases are
provided in the Ariel run file submitted by the customer. The Ariel compressor internal damper modeling
properties and response allowables are from Ariel Publication ER-83. Analytical model hysteresis damping
(also known as “relative” or “internal” damping) is set to 2% of critical at the engine and 1.0% at the
compressor and coupling, for all frequencies. The 1.0% compressor value is recommended by Ariel.
Figure 1 presents modal data of the first five torsional vibration modes, showing the damped natural
frequencies, modeshapes, and modal damping of each. Modal damping is typically greater than hysteresis
alone because of damper contributions. The modeshapes are approximate.
The load cases are summarized in Table 2 with the source run file indicated at the top. Each load case was
executed with two runs of the model: one run applying engine excitations alone at the BMEP levels shown, and
one run applying compressor excitations alone. The responses of the two runs were then added together.
This results in maximum envelope system response values reflecting the combined input of the engine and
compressor and is consistent with worst case engine/compressor phasing. The worst case results are then
plotted herein and compared to the acceptance criteria (allowables) of Table 3, also indicated in the plots.
Discussion of Results
The KBK/4 internal damper is needed to reduce the auxiliary drive end amplitudes to within Ariel allowables.
Preliminary runs showed that without the damper these amplitudes exceeded limit by up to 27%.
Figures 2 through 10 present final predicted system responses compared to allowables. All submitted load
cases were examined and the worst case responses are presented in this report. All responses are 0-pk
except for damper housing amplitudes. The analytical speed range is 720 RPM to 1320 RPM which is the
engine rated speed range of 800 RPM to 1200 RPM with a +/-10% expansion added. This expansion is
defined to cover possible inaccuracies in the modal frequency predictions. The dash-dot lines define this
speed envelope and also the allowables as applicable.
Although the load cases and associated excitations are defined at specific speeds in the Ariel run file, it is
assumed that this drive train will nevertheless operate across the speed range from 800 RPM to 1200 RPM
with the corresponding transmitted torques (constant engine BMEP) of Table 2. This is typical of compressor
applications and is reflected in the plots.
All predicted system responses are well within allowables and show the effectiveness of the KBK/4 internal
compressor damper.
The highest engine responses always correspond to the highest P9394GSI S5 engine load of 176 psi BMEP,
which for this drive train occurs under LC 1 and 2. The load case that drives the highest compressor
contribution to each response is identified in the legend and does not necessarily match the maximum engine
BMEP. Doing this results in the maximum possible levels for each response.

Figure 2: damper amplitudes – this plot shows the highest levels of the major excitation orders, primarily driven
by LC1. However, LC’s 5, 7, and 9 drive the highest levels for the 1x, 2x, and 4x excitations, respectively.
Figure 5: coupling vibratory torque amplitudes – LC5 drives the maximum compressor contribution to this
response and loads the engine at 144 psi BMEP (see Table 2); nevertheless the 155,716 in-lbf allowable
corresponds to an engine load of 176 psi BMEP to minimize the allowable and cover all possibilities. The
mean torque of 98,809 in-lbf shown corresponds to LC5.
