INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN CONDITION
Human civilization = development of science and technology
Human person: bearer and beneficiary of science and technology
: pursuit of good life (acquire, consume, destroy)
: whenever a community is developing -> also knowledge,
tools, and technology
: Tech - created to alleviate living condition
Science and Technology
: part of human life
: merits reflective and meditative thinking
: gives meaning to life
WHO IS MARTIN HEIDEGGER?
• German philosopher of the 20th century
• Joined Nazi party up until disbandment (1943)
• Taught in University of (1949)
• Influential German philosopher of 20th century
• Garnered support of post-modernist structuralist philosopher
like Jack
• Philosophical work = ontology (study of being)
• Genuine knowledge
: correct but not necessarily true (look for meaning and
significance)
: Technology is a way of revealing about human and the world =
bring forth the truth (can be pursued through correct)
: True can be pursued through correct
: Experiencing and understanding what is correct will lead to what
is true
• The things we are considering the
truth may not necessarily be the
truth in the near future
TECHNOLOGY AS A MODE OF REVEALING
Weeping Earth: can be revealed by different information and data
gathered
: discover what is the truth that can be accomplished by
tools with the use of technology
: different apparatus to measure certain things
: in a much larger scale, we are going to discover
ourselves with the use of technology

: technology is a tool and varies in usage

2. Anthropological Teckne: skill, cunning of hand
: human activity to achieve an end Aletheia: Bringing out
: production of technological equipment, tools and Poiesis: Bringing forth = truth
machine and the purpose and function they serve
TECHNOLOGY AS POEISIS: APPLICABLE TO
Instrumental/Instrumentum: in getting things done MODERN TECHNOLOGY
Tool: varies in usage Modern Technology
Anthropological: human activity to achieve an end : a challenging forth = far more aggressive
e.g. then – pick axe, hand tools
TECHNOLOGY AS A WAY OF REVEALING : mode of revealing but not as harmonious as poesis

 QUESTIONING AS THE PEITY OF THOUGHT

• Thinking brings forth insight to things that we don’t fully
understood.
• Whatever understanding is found became significant because
it is evoked by questioning who or what we essentially are in
the world.

ENFRAMING: WAY OF REVEALING MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Enframing
: way of revealing in modern technology
: way of looking at reality as it is being perceived by man
: nature is placed in a box or frame to better understand it and
controlled according to people’s desire.
: Technology is bringing forth
: Modern technology much more aggressive
Example: Rhine river

: Poesis is concealed in enframing

Calculative Thinking: system is placed in nature to be

understood better and controlled; element of time and sense of
control
Meditative Thinking: observing nature as it is and not in any way
destructing it
Windmill: not a modern technology because you allow
nature to give its power and not disrupting it

DANGERS OF TECHNOLOGY

- Nature would remain even if humans cease to exist
- We must not be consumed by technology
- The role of human to take instruments of technology
through enframing is called destining.

HUMAN PERSON SWALLOWED BY TECHNOLOGY

: man swallowed by technology = lose the essence of who we are
: no longer has the capacity for authentic personal encounter
: can no longer let go of the convenience and profit
