Evaluating Search Engines

Introduction
What this research paper is all about
With the fast-paced technology, the number of people doing a traditional research
method of going to the library and reading books, magazines, and encyclopedia has
been constantly decreasing. With the existence of internet, doing a research had
become a piece of cake. Different varieties of search engine are found on the World
Wide Web. Just type the words or phrases that you want to research and the search
engine will automatically search it for you. There are different types of search engines
and each type has its strengths and weaknesses.
In this research paper, I will be evaluating three different types of search engines: a
typical search engine, a metasearch engine, and a Deep Web search engine. In this
paper, the researcher will provide a thorough analysis on the features of each type of
search engine. The researcher would also discuss the advantages and disadvantages
of the search engines. The researcher would base his analysis on an evaluation criteria
provided.
Who I am
Name
Aaron Phillip Inoncillo Cuñano
Academic information
DEGREE PROGRAM, YEAR IN COLLEGE
I am a fourth year BS Business Management student at the University of the
Philippines Diliman Extension Program in Pampanga.
COURSES WHERE RESEARCH IS USED
Almost every course that I had during my college life required me to conduct a
research. Right from my GE subjects up to my major Business Management subjects,
research is very important. Whenever I have to make a paper, research is very much
needed in order to have information for my paper. Through research, I get to acquire
new information which are very useful every subject. Even though there is no paper
required in a subject, I still conduct research on the topics that I do not understand. By
doing this, I get a clearer understanding on that specific topic. In the end, it can be
concluded that doing a research is used in all of my subjects.
How I conduct research
The methods of research I employ and the frequency I use them
LIBRARY RESEARCH
I do a library research whenever I need to find information which cannot be found on
the Internet. Not all things are placed on the net, some old books, newspaper clippings,
and the like are only located in some libraries like the University of the Philippines
Library. I conduct a library research when he is required to by the professor and when I
am searching for information which are not found on the internet.

FACE-TO-FACE INTERVIEWS
Face-to-face interviews are done by myself when I am conducting a research on a
company. Typically, interviews are done to have a further grasp on how a company
works. Though interviews, more detailed information can be acquired from the
interviewee.
SURVEYS
I conduct research through surveys whenever the research requires feasibility studies.
Normally, surveys are done to get a research on the things that the public or market
want. Surveys are important whenever I need to research about the voice of the public.
ONLINE SEARCH TOOLS
This research method is the commonly used method of the researching. Because of
the ease and convenience of online search tools, I prefer this method over the former
methods mentioned. Almost every research that I did was done using online search
tools.

Search engines
What is a search engine?
Definition
A search engine is a software program that searches for sited based in the words that
you designate as search terms. Search engines look through their own databases of
information in in order to find what is that you are looking for. Basically, search engine
is one online search tools that is commonly used by almost everyone in conducting
their own research. Search engines are not simple. They include incredibly detailed
processes and methodologies, and are updated all the time.

History: The people / organization behind the search engine

G oogle Search, commonly known as Google is a web search engine developed

by Google. This search engine is the most-used search engine on the World
Wide Web with more than three billion searches every day. As of February
2016, Google is the most used search engine in the United States with 64% market
share. Google search was launched on September 15, 1997 and was written in
Python, C, C++. Currently, Google Search is available in 123 languages.
Originally the search engine used Stanford's website with the
domain google.stanford.edu. The domain google.com was registered on September
15, 1997. Both Sergey Brin and Larry Page, founders of Google Search had been
against using advertising pop-ups in a search engine, or an "advertising funded search
engines" model, and they wrote a research paper in 1998 on the topic while still
students. They changed their minds early on and allowed simple text ads

Features of this search engine

EASE OF USE AND USER-FRIENDLINESS
Google is a search engine which is very easy to use. With its user-friendly interface,
anyone can search his/her desired idea. The homepage is very simple thus, it provides
convenience to the person using the search engine. Google’s homepage has also
different search tabs for image and video search. This makes searching for an image
or video easier. Finally, Google has the option to use the search engine on the
language a person desires. This provides ease and convenience to users who have a
hard time understanding English, the universal language in almost every search
engine.

AVAILABILITY OF HELP
Google has a special tab for help at the bottom of the website. If someone clicks the
link, Google will give some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) which can be helpful to
the user having a hard time using the search engine. Through the help tab, Google
also provides video tutorials which can be very helpful to the people who have little
background on the internet and computer.

AVAILABILITY OF ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES
Google does have an advance search feature. It is located at the settings and if you
click it, the advance search homepage will be shown. In advance search, you can input
words that you want to omit on your search in order to filter the results. You can also
do a safe search on the advance search. With this feature, Google will search for
results coming from safe references.
The pictures below are screenshots of the advance search feature of Google.

NUMBER OF RESULTS RETURNED
Google placed the total number of results on the homepage right after the search was
made. Most relevant results from your search phrase/s are displayed in the first pages
of results of Google. Google also provides several pages wherein you can view other
results.

SPEED THAT RESULTS ARE RETURNED AND DISPLAYED

Aside from the number of results found, Google also placed the average speed that the
results are found. The average speed is located beside the total number of results
found.

RELEVANCE OF RESULTS TAPPED
Google will give results which are relevant to the search phrase that you input on the
search bar. Google also gives search phrases suggestions which are relevant to the
search phrase that you input. The results given by Google will be based on how
specific the search phrase that you placed.

DIVERSITY OF SOURCES TAPPED
Google has a diverse number of sources for its search results. Google gets its results
from different number of resources like different websites, URLs, blogs, news, books,
videos, audios, etc. Google also gets results from Maps.

CLASSIFICATION OF RESULTS BY SOURCE, RELEVANCE, CLOSENESS OF MATCH

Google does not have a classification or categorization of results by source, relevance
or closeness of match. Google does not divide the results into groups or classifications.
However, Google will give suggestion search phrases that are relevant to your search
phrase that you input on the search bar.

ABILITY TO AUTOMATICALLY FILTER RESULTS FOR USER-SPECIFIED TERMS
You can filter the results of your search in Google by putting all the necessary
words/phrases in the search tab of Google. Advance search also helps in filtering the
results because this search can limit the search phrases thus, it can filter the results for
user-specified items. Google can also filter image, video, and the like searches,
because it has its own search bar for images, video, etc.

ABILITY TO REMOVE DUPLICATE LINKS FROM MULTIPLE SITES
Google has the ability to remove duplicate links from multiple sites. Whenever a user is
searching for a very specific item, there is a tendency that the results will be duplicated.
Google has the ability to avoid this situation since it removes the duplicates searches
after it notices the similarities of the results given. It even gives you some solutions on
how to remove duplicate link from multiple sites.

ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT COMPLEX SEARCH PARAMETERS USING BOOLEAN OPERATORS
Google has the ability to construct complex search parameters using Boolean
operators. Boolean Operators are used to connect and define the relationship between
your search terms. When searching electronic databases, you can use Boolean
operators to either narrow or broaden your record sets. The three Boolean operators
are AND, OR and NOT. Boolean operators such as and, or, and not can filter the
results that Google will search. It will give different results based on the Boolean
operators that you used. The number of results also changes depending on the type of
Boolean operator that you used.

ABILITY TO LOCATE IMAGES, AUDIO AND VIDEO CLIPS, PDFS AND OTHER FILE FORMATS
Google provides convenience whenever searching for images, audios, videos, PDFs
and other file formats. Google can easily locate these file formats since it has a
separate search tab for searching videos and images. Google also distinguishes PDFs
and Docs on its search making it easy to locate the files which are in PDF or PPT
format.

Metasearch engines
What is a metasearch engine?
Definition
Metasearch engine is a search tool that uses another search engine’s data to produce
their own results from the internet. These search engines specialize in concatenating
databases from a variety of search engines and linking search results to relevant
sources. Metasearch engines use a complex algorithm that allows virtual databases to
be generated on the fly. A virtual database “virtually” mirrors the physical database
results of other search engines.
All search result information and data are listed in a virtual database, and searches
may be concentrated according to varied criteria. Thus, no two meta search engines
are alike because they all operate with different criteria, such as news sites and
newsgroups depending on the algorithm designed to perform specified search
functions.
Why use a metasearch engine
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
One advantage of a metasearch engine is that we can get results from multiple search
engines without having to visit each one. Metasearch engines give our search a
broader scope to look at, since search engine’s index differs from each other. Also,
these search engines have one user interface and one syntax to remember. Finally,
the maintainers of these search engines make sure that any new resources are utilized
by their service and so we do not have to find these resource ourselves.

DISADVANTAGES AND RISKS
Metasearch engines also have disadvantages. Some of its disadvantages are: it needs
to decode query forms and the translations of query syntax and fields are not exact.
Also, some sources don’t sort by relevance. Metasearch engines are also vulnerable to
search spam. The results returned of metasearch engines are returned as HTML
without useful tagging and it requires screen scrapping. Finally, these search engines’
have variable quality and they must keep up with changes in source engines.

History: The people / organization behind the search engine

Y ippy is a leading metasearch engine, providing results and topics for research
and discovery. Formerly known as Clusty, Yippy was developed by Vivisimo on
2009. Yippy has evolved from its educational roots into a provider of search and
eDiscovery technologies for all types of consumers of data. Yippy’s search technology,
born out of Carnegie Mellon, was acquired by the company in 2010. This included the
acquisition of an unlimited worldwide perpetual license for the software known as
Velocity from Vivisimo, acquired by IBM (2012) and renamed IBM Watson Explorer.
Clusty was developed by Vivísimo. Vivísimo was a company built on Web search
technology developed by Carnegie Mellon University researchers, much like Lycos was
a decade earlier. Clusty added new features and a new interface to the previous
Vivisimo clustering web metasearch. Different tabs also offer metasearches for news,
jobs (in partnership with Indeed.com), U.S. government info and blogs. Customized
tabs allow users to select sources for their own metasearch to create personalized tab.

Features of this metasearch engine
EASE OF USE AND USER-FRIENDLINESS
Yippy is easy to use. Just type the search phrases that you want and Yippy displays all
relevant information. With the simplicity of the interface of this search engine, anyone
regardless of their computer literacy can search on Yippy. Yippy provides convenience
and simplicity when searching for information.

AVAILABILITY OF HELP
Yippy lacks the help or the (Frequently Asked Questions) FAQ button. I think it will be
difficult to seek help on Yippy since there is no help or FAQ links. The only hyperlinks
available are the terms of use, privacy policy and the information about the Yippy.

AVAILABILITY OF ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES

Yippy lacks the advanced features like Google. However, when you type your search
phrases, it will give you the results and groups the results into groups. An additional
factor is that on the left side of the page, the results are clustered into different groups.
For example, the researcher searched for “online entrepreneurship”. Yippy provides
groups that are relevant to “online entrepreneurship” such as university, MBA, family,
blog, courses, etc.

NUMBER OF RESULTS RETURNED
Yippy gives several results based on your search. It provides a number of relevant
information based on your search phrases. It gives you the total number of results
searched. The total number of results is displayed on the upper right side the search
engine along with the details of the results.

SPEED THAT RESULTS ARE RETURNED AND DISPLAYED
Speed is not an issue in Yippy. When you type your search phrases, it will instantly
give you the results. Plus, Yippy provides the speed of the results found. This can be
found by clicking the details next to the total number of results obtained. This can be
found on the upper right corner of the search engine. This tab will give the total number
of results retrieved in x number of seconds.

RELEVANCE OF RESULTS TAPPED

All data and information results are relevant to the search phrases. It even provides
groups that can be helpful in searching for information. An additional factor is that on
the left side of the page, the results are clustered into different groups. With this
feature, other relevant data which are similar to the search engine that you input will be
displayed.

DIVERSITY OF SOURCES TAPPED

Just like Google, Yippy has diverse sources of information. It has sources from school,
universities, blogs, other sites, etc.

CLASSIFICATION OF RESULTS BY SOURCE, RELEVANCE, CLOSENESS OF MATCH
Yippy has a categorization of results whenever you search for something. It is
displayed on the left side of the page. It provides group that are relevant on the search
phrase that you input. The groups or clusters provide more information which are close
and match to the search phrase that you input.

ABILITY TO AUTOMATICALLY FILTER RESULTS FOR USER-SPECIFIED TERMS
You can filter your results based on your specified items. Just place your specified
search phrase and Yippy will search for it. Also, Yippy filters out the result into groups
or clusters for user-specified items. These groups can be accessed on the left side of
the screen.

ABILITY TO REMOVE DUPLICATE LINKS FROM MULTIPLE SITES

There is no ability to remove duplicate links from multiple sites in Yippy. Since it does
not have an advance search tab, you do not have the option to limit the links that the
search will generate

ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT COMPLEX SEARCH PARAMETERS USING BOOLEAN OPERATORS

When searching electronic databases, you can use Boolean operators to either narrow
or broaden your record sets. The three Boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT.
With Yippy, the use of Boolean operators, the number or results can increase or
decrease. By using “or”, results will increase. The use of “and” and “not” will limit the
search, thus fewer results will be shown.

ABILITY TO LOCATE IMAGES, AUDIO AND VIDEO CLIPS, PDFS AND OTHER FILE FORMATS
It is somehow difficult to search for images, audio, video clips and PDFs in Yippy.
When searching for photos, Yippy does not immediately flash the pictures, but instead,
it will give you the link where you can find the pictures. The same case happens when
you need to search for video clips, PDFs and other file formats. However, Yippy
provides a preview tab wherein you can have a preview of the site where the image or
video is found.

What other features would be nice to have?
Yippy is almost complete with nice features. However, one thing that is missing in
Yippy is the ability to ask for help. It is notable that Yippy has no FAQs tab wherein
some help questions can be seen. Also, Yippy lacks the advanced search feature.
Yippy can’t perform a detailed search because it has no advance search tab.
In the end, to make Yippy more user friendly, it needs to have an FAQ tab or a help
button. With this feature, people who are having a hard time using the site can easily
ask for help whenever they are encountering some problems. Also, it would be also

nice to have an advance search tab on Yippy. With this feature, people can perform
complex search because advance search has the option to omit or add some words
that can filter the specific results.
How it compares with my favorite search engine
Did I like the metasearch engine I tried out?
Personally, I like some of the features of this metasearch search engine. However, I do
not like of its features. It is hard to search for pictures and videos on Yippy. It does not
show the main image but it only shows the link where the picture is found. Yippy has
also no advance search features unlike Google. Yippy has also no FAQ button where
people can ask help. However, one thing I like about Yippy is that, it gives result
suggestions which are relevant to the search phrase that you input.
Will I shift to this metasearch engine?
Overall, Yippy has its strengths and weaknesses. Based from my experience on using
Yippy, it depends on the situation that I will shift to this search engine. In searching for
images and videos, I will definitely not shift to Yippy because it does not show the
image or video itself. If I am searching for a diverse topic, I will shift to this website
because it clusters the results into group which are very helpful and relevant to the
search phrase that I placed on the search bar.

Deep Web Search engines

What is a Deep Web search engine?
Definition
Deep Web is referred to the data which are not indexed by any standard search engine
such as Google and Yahoo. The Deep Web refers to all web pages that search
engines cannot find, such as user databases, registration-required web forums,
webmail pages, and pages behind paywalls.
Deep Web is also as “Invisible web” since it refers to a vast repository of underlying
content, such as documents in online databases that the general purpose web crawlers
cannot each. It is estimated that the deep web content is estimated to be 500 times
bigger than normal search contents, yet has remained mostly untapped due to the
limitations of traditional search engines.
Why use a Deep Web search engine
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
One advantage of deep search engine is that it provides access to sites that are have
not been indexed by search engines, including database entries. These searches often
yield links that we cannot find through a source such as Google. Another advantage of
the deep web is that is offers an avenue for expression, organization and the influx of
information for people living under oppressive or restrictive regimes. Deep Web
searches analyze each page’s entire content, ensuring returns results have a higher
relevance to the desired search string.

DISADVANTAGES AND RISKS
One major disadvantage if Deep web is that it is dark and dangerous place. The
anonymity of Deep web attracts criminal activity ranging from the sales of illegal drugs
and weapons and to the trading of child pornography and even the hiring of contract
killers. Also, the deep web doesn’t work as smoothly as the regulated Internet. These
search engines are very slow and takes much longer to use both because of the
network itself and because some of the information is self-hosted. Navigating is more
difficult in deep web and it takes some time to learn to use efficiently. Deep web
searches may also return sensitive personal information from normally restricted
databases, creating ethical dilemas.

History: The people / organization behind the search engine

G igaBlast is a Deep Web search engine with over 2 billion pages in its index.
GigaBlast offers fast service, relevant search query results, and a couple of
pretty cool extra search features. GigaBlast was founded on 2000.
GigaBlast supports various specialized searches and Boolean algebra operators. It
also supports a related-concepts feature called Giga Bits and a blog-search feature.
GigaBlast started as a small independent web search engine based in New Mexico.
Founded last 2000, GigaBlast was established by Matt Wells, formerly of Infoseek. On
2015, GigaBlast claimed to have indexed over 12 billion web pages, and received
billions queries per month. GigaBlast has provided, and provides, search results to
different companies like Ixquick, Clusty, Zuula, Snap and Bingo.

Features of this metasearch engine
EASE OF USE AND USER-FRIENDLINESS
Just like Yippy and Google, GigaBlast is easy to use. Just input your search phrases
and it will give you the results. However, since GigaBlast is more advanced search
engine, some people may find using GigaBlast difficult. The homepage displays a lot of
information in which it may cause difficulty for people with little computer background.

AVAILABILITY OF HELP
GigaBlast has a hyperlink for its FAQs. Just click on the FAQ and it will direct you to
the answers to your questions. The questions in FAQs include basic search questions.
FAQ also provides help in searching in GigaBlast with different types of operating
systems such as Mac, Windows or Linux. FAQs also include steps on hoe to
screenshot and the like. The FAQ table has a table of contents of the common FAQs.

AVAILABILITY OF ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES
GigaBlast is more advanced than Yippy. It has a special tab for advanced search in
which you can classify your search based on the data you input. You can omit some
words, and cluster the sites to search. It has also the feature to search for the exact
phrases on the search bar. When you use the web search you can classify the results
based on its relevance, time, etc. It has also a directory of search phrases.

NUMBER OF RESULTS RETURNED
GigaBlast gives the total number of results returned. Since it is more advanced, it has a
lot of information. 10 results are displayed on every page of the total number of results.

SPEED THAT RESULTS ARE RETURNED AND DISPLAYED

Results are returned and displayed fast on Gigablast. Right after you type the
keywords, it will give the results. Advance search may take some time because of its
specific information. The total speed on how the results are returned and displayed can
be seen beside the total number of results found. These can be seen below the search
bar.

RELEVANCE OF RESULTS TAPPED
Just like Yippy, all data searched by GigaBlast are relevant. The relevance of the
results depends on how specific your search phrase is. Specifically, the advance
search provides more relevant data based on the specific information that you input.

DIVERSITY OF SOURCES TAPPED
GigaBlast has diverse sources of information. Other sites and other search engines are
just some sources of information of GigaBlast. Since it is a deep web search engine,
GigaBlast has far more sources of data compared to the other search engines.

CLASSIFICATION OF RESULTS BY SOURCE, RELEVANCE, CLOSENESS OF MATCH

At the directory page, GigaBlast provides categories such as arts, business, health,
news, etc. that can easily help you on your search. And when you click on a specific
category, it will link you to other information that is relevant to that category. With this
feature, results can be easily classified.

ABILITY TO AUTOMATICALLY FILTER RESULTS FOR USER-SPECIFIED TERMS

Advanced search lets you input specific items and GigaBlast will filter the results for
you. You can choose to search for exact phrases or in specific sites.

ABILITY TO REMOVE DUPLICATE LINKS FROM MULTIPLE SITES
GigaBlast has the ability to remove duplicate links from multiple sites. On its advanced
search tab, GigaBlast gives you the opportunity to limit its search. GigaBlast has the
option to search for pages that link URLs based on your search. GigaBlast has also an
option wherein you can use site clustering. You can also add URL to the main
collection of GigaBlast.

ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT COMPLEX SEARCH PARAMETERS USING BOOLEAN OPERATORS
With GigaBlast’s advanced search, you have the ability to construct complex searches.
In the advanced search tab, Gigablast gives you the opportunity to limit your search
parameters. It has the option to search for all words and phrases, but you can opt not
to include any or none of other words. Using Boolean operators when searching in
GigaBlast does not generate the same results with Yippy. Using “and” will give fewer
results. But using “not” and “or” will give far more complex results.

ABILITY TO LOCATE IMAGES, AUDIO AND VIDEO CLIPS, PDFS AND OTHER FILE FORMATS
Just like Yippy, Gigablast does not provide pictures immediately. Unlike other search
engines, GigaBlast does not have an image button where you can filter your search
just for images. When searching for pictures, GigaBlast will give you links where you
can find the photos. The same situation happens when you search for videos, PDFs
and other file formats. Since GigaBlast has an advanced search, GigaBlast has the
ability to filter its search based on the specific information that you input.

What other features would be nice to have?
GigaBlast is almost complete with nice features. Its features give it an advantage over
the other search engines. However, one thing that is missing in this deep web search
engine is the ability to locate pictures, videos, files, etc. It would be nice to have a
specific search tab dedicated for these items. Just like Google, GigaBlast should have
a search bar dedicated to searching for images and videos. Also, it would be nice to
have a preview whenever an image or videos are searched in this deep web search
engine.
How it compares with my favorite search engine
Did I like the Deep Web search engine I tried out?
Personally, I like the deep web search engine that I tried out. It has nice features and
the results that it gives are a lot. I can also perform complex searches because the
search engine’s advanced search function. However, locating images and videos are
hard in the deep web search engine. Using the search engine was a little bit confusing.
The reason behind this is that I am used to in using Google as my search engine.
Nonetheless, GigaBlast is a great search engine. It gives detailed results.
Will I shift to this Deep Web search engine?
Based from my experience, I will only shift to this Deep Web search engine if I am
searching for a diverse topic. Deep Web offers a much larger result because of its
large database. If I really want to have a deep search on a certain topic, I will definitely
use the deep web search engine. However, looking for pictures and videos is hard in
the deep web search engine. Also, my safety is at risk when using deep web search
engine. This is the primary reason why I am hesitant in shifting to this kind of search
engine.

Summary and Conclusions

Summary
The summary of the evaluation of the different websites are presented on the table
below. Using high, medium, and low as comparison, each search engine was
compared based on each evaluation criteria.

In the end, it can be observed that the three search engines are almost similar with
each other. Although there some features missing in some search engine. For
example, Yippy lacks a help and FAQ button and the ability to conduct an advanced
search. Also, searching images, videos, PDFs etc. are hard in using Yippy and
GigaBlast since these search engines have no specific tab for image or video search.
Conclusion
Based from my experience in using the three kinds of search engine, I believe that I will
still use Google as my search engine. Based from the evaluation criteria presented,
Google is almost complete with the features. It has an advanced search, and locating
images and videos is very easy. Also, Google has the ability to show several results
from several sources. Google also shows the speed of how these results are acquired.
I also found out that in this evaluation of search engines that Google has a hidden
advanced search. I was amazed that Google has this kind of feature since I always use
the common search by just typing the search phrase on the search bar.
Yippy on the other hand lacks an advanced search and a help button. These features
are very important in a search engine because it can filter the results and it can solve a
problem respectively. Yippy also lacks an image and video search, thus searching for
these kind of information is hard. The same goes through when searching for PDF files
and other formats. GigaBlast also lacks the ability to remove duplicate links from
multiple sites. One plus factor of Yippy is that it shows a preview of the websites of the

results. In the end, Yippy’s advantages cannot suffice the meta search engine’s
disadvantages.
Finally, GigaBlast is almost complete with nice features. The main drawback of this
website is that it hard to locate images, videos, and PDF files. Unlike Google,
GigaBlast has no specific image search making it hard to search for images. Also,
GigaBlast is not so user-friendly since the interface of the homepage is complex. It has
several tab buttons that can overwhelm users who have little knowledge on computers.
I will still use Google as a search engine since it is simple, user-friendly, and filled with
nice features. As a student, searching images, videos, and other files is very important.
Only Google has the ability to easily locate these kinds of files. What amazed me is
that Google has the advanced search feature. I always thought that Google is just a
simple search engine with no other features. With this evaluation, I found out that
Google has one. With this feature Google has now the same feature of a Deep Web
search engine. Google still is the best website for some people. With its features,
Google is still superior to the two types of websites
