WORD PROBLEMS
1. A block of aluminum occupies a volume of 15.0 mL and weighs 40.5 g. What is its
density?
2. Mercury metal is poured into a graduated cylinder that holds exactly 22.5 mL. The
mercury used to fill the cylinder weighs 306.0 g. From this information, calculate the
density of mercury.
3. What is the weight of the ethanol that exactly fills a 200.0 mL container? The density of
ethanol is 0.789 g/mL.
Upthrust and density
Aim: To be able to measure the weight of objects in air, water and salt water and explain
the results.
Equipment:
Method:
1. Attach the Newton meter to each object and record its weight in air and record this
into your table
2. Place each object into water and record the weight when the object is either floating
on its own or fully submerged but not touching the bottom. Record this in your table.
3. Replace the water with salt water and repeat step 3.
Results:
Object Air (N) Water (N) Salt water (N)
