Matt Byrne: Big, Fat Rock Beats In Four

By Matt Byrne Originally published in the April 2014 issue of DRUM! Magazine

This month we’re going to work on some basic eighth-note and sixteenth-note rock beats in 4/4 time (which means there
are four quarter-notes to the bar). While they are relatively simple and straightforward you should use them to concentrate
on achieving a solid, heavy-handed feel and groove. These beats are played in 4/4 time.

The first four exercises are played with eighth-notes on the ride and your foot on the hi-hat. The next two exercises are
sixteenth-notes while opening the cymbals in several spots throughout the beat. The sixteenth-note beats are written out
as being played with two hands, however, you can try playing them with one hand as you become comfortable with them.
