N1 Kanji Textbook
Hey guys, Does anyone know a really good book for learning the N1
kanji?

And also as a bonus, does anyone know where I can read material
with ALOT of N1 kanji? I tend to find alot of newspaper articles
having 90percent N2 kanji and below and 10Percent N1 kanji. Got
anything better? Thanks!

I think that's the expected distribution. N2 Kanjis are like 85%
of the common language usage. N1 Will only get you to like
95%. A couple more thousand will get you to 98% and so on.
Keep reading newspapers, serious novels, etc.

It's roughly:

~JLPT # of Kanji Coverage

N5 150 50%

N4/N3 500 75%

N2 1000 90%

N1.5 1500 95%

N1 2000 97.5%

N1+ 2500 98.8%

N1++ 3000 99.5%

Don't read too much into JLPT levels since they have their
own non-published list (like word lists and grammar, it's
guesstimated by 3rd parties after taking the test). The # of
Kanji is just rounding to the closest when you get near
percentage by total count.

Source was a scan of 5200 Japanese novels (~13 million

characters), though NavyDave has a similar result using
scans of ~13 million characters derived from NetFlix
subtitles.

It's not quite that drastic, unless maybe you're limiting
your scope solely to advanced/technical literature.
Someone scraped every kanji from all subtitles present in
Japanese Netflix a while back though, and found:

Freq. | Kanji

90% - 865

95% - 1171

99% - 1821

99.1% - 1861

99.2% - 1905

99.9% - 2650

100% - 4271

It's probably even slightly less drastic than these numbers

show, too, if you were to somehow discount all of the
kanji that were only (or mostly) used just for names.

I used 新完全マスター漢字 and 使う順と連想マップで学ぶ漢字
&語彙―日本語能力試験N1 for kanji, as well as lots of reading.

who else is learning japanese as a hobby, not

because you need to

i picked up japanese because well i have nothing else to do and thought it
was interesting and as i watch anime and listen to japanese songs. anyone
else learning it as a hobby too? and is there any point learning kanji if i’m
not necessarily going to use it that often and possibly forget it all, putting
all the months/years it will take to learn it down the drain.
