Lesson Idea Name: A Pocket Full of Pennies

Content Area/Grade(s): Math/ Kindergarten

Content Standard Summarized:

MGSEK.CC.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions

c. Identify and be able to count pennies within 20. (Use pennies as manipulatives in multiple
mathematical contexts.)

Technology Standard Addressed: 6a: Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the
desired objectives of their creation or communication.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Powerpoint

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

X Remembering X Understanding X Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating X Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

X Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

By using a fun book with eye-catching pictures and graphics, students will be engaged and focused. After
reading the book to the class, students will complete a worksheet with questions similar to the ones in the
book. For students who might learn best from a different source, I will have other options available to score
them on.

Lesson idea implementation:

Teacher will read the ebook about counting pennies two times. The first time, students will just listen as the
teacher reads. The second time the book is read, the teacher will go over each page with the class and count
the pennies together as a whole. After the book is read, students will complete a worksheet where they will
count pennies. If they finish the worksheet early, they can do extra worksheets for practice. To assess the
students, they will complete a worksheet and turn it into the teacher for a grade. When giving feedback, the
teacher will meet with each student individually to go over their worksheet and review what answers they got
wrong. Students will also create their own counting story. They can work with a partner or individually. They
get to choose what the story is about and how they will design their pages. The teacher will provide paint,
markers, colored pencils, and color crayons along with paper for the students to use to create each page.
Once the students have completed their story pages, they will use the class set of laptops to use PowerPoint
to duplicate their counting story pictures. After they have created their story on powerpoint, they will record
themselves reading their story. The teacher will save the PowerPoint recordings as an Mp4 file, and the entire
class will have created their own counting story eBook to share with friends and family. When the lesson is
over, the teacher will give a brief summary of what the students learned during the lesson.

Reflective Practice:

I think this lesson will positively impact student learning. It includes an engaging book with fun graphics, an
interactive hands-on activity, and fun worksheets to review. I designed this lesson as an introduction to
counting pennies up to 20 answering the question “how many”. To further extend this lesson, teachers could
add on 5 pennies and have them count up to 25 to further challenge them once they have mastered 20.
