What is It
Measures of Position is a method by which the position that data value
has within a given data set can be identified. Most used in this lesson is median
which is the middle value when a set of data is arranged in order of increasing
magnitude. In this module, you will determine the measure of position in each
set of data. The distribution of set of data divides equally is called Quantiles.
One of the quantiles is Quartile that divides the distribution into four equal
parts.

There are three quartiles denoted by 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 :

➢ First Quartile (𝐐𝟏 ) is also called the lower quartile. It is the middle
1
value of the lower half. This separates 𝑜𝑟 25% of the sorted values
4
3
from the upper 𝑜𝑟 75% of the values.
4

➢ Second Quartile (𝐐𝟐 ) is the median of the entire data. This divides
the data into a lower half and an upper half. It separates the bottom
1 1
𝑜𝑟 50% of the sorted values from the upper 𝑜𝑟 50% of the values.
2 2

➢ Third Quartile (𝑸𝟑 ) is also called the upper quartile. It is the middle
3
value of the upper half. This separates the bottom 𝑜𝑟 75% of the
4
1
sorted values from the upper 4 𝑜𝑟 25% of the values.

To identify the position of quartiles, you need to consider the following

steps:

1. Arrange the set of data in ascending order.

2. Find the median of the entire data set. This is 𝑄2 .
3. Find the median of the lower half of the set of data. This is 𝑄1.
4. Find the median of the upper half of the set of data. This is 𝑄3 .

The diagram below is a representation of quartiles when the given data is

arranged in increasing order.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

You may also use the formula if there are n observation in a set of data,
(𝒏+𝟏) 𝒏+𝟏
then Q1 can be identified as the th position, Q2 as the th and Q3 as the
𝟒 𝟐
𝟑(𝒏+𝟏)
th position.
𝟒
𝒌
Formula in finding the quartiles of ungrouped data 𝑸𝒌 = (𝒏 + 𝟏)
𝟒
where k is the nth partition and n is the number of observations.
The interquartile range (IQR) is the spread of the middle 50% of the data
values.
The interquartile range is a more useful measure of spread than the
range as it describes the middle 50% of the data values. It is the difference
between the upper quartile (𝑄3 ) and the lower quartile (𝑄1 ) in the set of data
𝐼𝑄𝑅 = 𝑄3 − 𝑄1

the total number

Example 1: Find the median, lower quartile and upper of observations

Therefore, 25% of the data scored lower than or equal to 3, 50% of the
data scored lower than or equal to 6 and 75% of the data scored lower than or
equal to 8.
Example 2: Find the median, lower quartile and upper The total number
of observations in
quartile of the sets of data 5, 3, 7, 8, 5, 4, 4, 13, 10, 9, 8, 8 this set of data is
even
𝒏 = 𝟏𝟐

If there is an even number of data items, then we need to get the average
of the middle numbers.
➢ Arrange in order:
3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 8, 8, 8 , 9, 10, 13
Lower half Median upper half

➢ Median (middle value)

𝑛+1 12+1 13

➢ Lower quartile (Q1) (middle value of the lower half)

𝑛+1 12+1 13

4 4 4

Across:
1. A method that determine the position of a value within a given data set.

Down:
1. The difference between upper quartile and the lower quartile
2. The score points which divide a distribution into four equal parts.
3. The median of the lower half of the data
4. The middle value of the sorted data set
5. The median of the upper half of the data
6. The distribution of set of data divides equally is called___.

What is It
In the previous lesson, quartile divides the distribution into four equal
parts and each part has 25%. The deciles are the nine score points which
divide a distribution into ten equal parts, each part represents 1/10 of the sample
or population. The deciles are denoted as 𝐷1 , 𝐷2 , 𝐷3 , 𝐷4, 𝐷5 , 𝐷6 , 𝐷7 , 𝐷8 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷9 .

The deciles determine the values of 10%, 20%, 30%, … and 90% of the
data. It also computed the same way in quartiles.

The diagram below shows the illustrated relationships of quartiles and

deciles when a given sets of data are arranged in increasing order.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

What is It
Percentiles are the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution
into 100 equal parts, each part represents 1/100 of the sample or population.
The percentiles are denoted as 𝑃1, 𝑃2,𝑃3 , … , 𝑃99 . These determine the values of
1%, 2%, 3%, … and 99% of the data. For examples, the first percentile (𝑃1 )
separates the lowest 1% from the other 99%, 10 th percentile (𝑃10 ) separates
the lowest 10% from the 90%, the 25th percentile (𝑃25 ) separates the lowest
25% from the other 75% and so on.

The relationship of median, quartile, decile and percentile are illustrated

below using number line from 0-100 value.

Base on the diagram, some deciles and quartiles have equivalent value
in percentiles such as: 𝑃10 = 𝐷1, 𝑃20 = 𝐷2 , 𝑃25 = 𝑄1 , 𝑃30 = 𝐷3 , 𝑃40 = 𝐷4 ,
𝑃50 = 𝐷5 = 𝑄2 , 𝑃60 = 𝐷6 , 𝑃70 = 𝐷7 , 𝑃75 = 𝑄3 , 𝑃80 = 𝐷8 , and 𝑃90 = 𝐷9 .

Example 1: Find the 𝑃80 in the set of data (9, 10, 7, 6, 3, 4, 3, 6, 2, 8, 5)

𝑛 = 11
➢ Arrange the data in ascending order.
2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
𝑘

𝑘
Position of 𝑃𝑘 = 100 (𝑛 + 1)
80 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
𝑃80 = 100 (11 + 1)
80
𝑃80 = 100 (12) Therefore, the 80th
960 percentile is 9.
𝑃80 = 100

𝑃80 = 9.6 ≈ 10
𝑃80 is the 10th element.
