Paap

Introduction
The story I am doing review is paap. The genre
of this story is short story. This story is
written by Humayun Ahmed. Humayun Ahmed knew how
the glorious liberation war was tainted by the
ignominious actions of collaborators who acted
against their own country. In his lifetime, he
was taken to be the most popular among the
fiction writers in Bangladesh. He wrote several
novels based on the Bangladesh Liberation War –
Aguner Poroshmoni, matal haowa, Paap, 1971 etc.
He wrote the short story of paap based on the
liberation war of 1971.

Summary
The short story is based on the liberation war
of Bangladesh. in the story storyteller telling
his story about how he committed sin for his
wife. The storyteller was a primary school
teacher in dhola village that time. He was newly
married and his wife Fuli was pregnant. They
were a happy in the harmony village dhola. But
when Pakistani military made camp in madhobkhali
union where the dhola village is located the
problem and suffering started from there. They
start torturing innocent people in that village.
They kidnapped younger girls from their houses
and no Trace of them was found.
One day the teacher’s wife called him and tell
him to promise her. she said “you can’t break
the promise, you have to do a work for me what I
am going to tell you now.” That teacher gets
nervous but he can’t deny to her because she was
pregnant and he loves her wife so much. She
confessed she gave shelter to an injured
Pakistani soldier in their storeroom. Who
survived from muktibahinis attack? And the
teacher has to get that Soldier to his camp
safely but the teacher knows that if he does so
people will be called him a betrayer. He gets
tensed. But he took a decision to handover him
to muktibahini. He called muktibahini they came
and captured that soldier and get him to their
camp and killed him.
In this story the writer shown the soldier an
innocent man. And teacher’s wife fuli a shelter
for him.
At the end of the story teacher’s wife dies to
give birth their first child. And the teacher
thinks that happened as a consequence of his sin
because he breached her promise.

Personal Reflection
I like the story because this story is quite
different from other liberation war stories. In
this story, the writer showed a Pakistani
soldier as a victim were other writers always
showed us Pakistani as only oppressors. Recently
I read the story Opohath which is also based on
1971. But in that story, I read only the brutal
activities of Pakistani soldiers. How a father
hiding him and his family because his son joins
the muktibakini and died.

Critical Analysis
The theme of the story paap is liberation war
and the center idea of the story is how people
suffer during a war. The author’s purpose for
writing the story to show us how brutal people
from both sides become in a war against each
other. And author successfully archived the
purpose. The story has a lesson and the lesson
is in a war people from both sides have to lose
no one is absolute winner.

Conclusion
This story is one of the masterpieces from
Humayun Ahmed. In this story he gives his own
point of view about a war. And he gives us a
beautiful lesson and that is in a war no one is
absolute winner. I strongly agree with him and I
recommend this story to read because it’s really
worth it.
