23rd June, 1949

Formation of the Awami Muslim


League

21st February, 1952

Bengali Language Movement reaches its peak


as the police open fire on protesting students

11th March, 1954

The United Front wins most of the seats in


the East Bengal Legislative Assembly.

30th May, 1954

Governor General Ghulam Muhammad deposes


United Front government and establishes
Governor-rule.

7th October, 1958

Martial law declared in Pakistan.

21st February, 1963

“Shaheed Minar” was inaugurated

5th February, 1966

In a national conference of Pakistan’s opposition


parties held in Lahore. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
placed his historic Six-Point demand at the
conference

8th May, 1966

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested under the


Defence of Pakistan Rules after addressing a rally of
jute mill workers in Narayanganj.
7th June, 1966

Awami League called a countrywide hartal in the


then East Pakistan in support of the historic Six-
Point movement.

19th June, 1968

Hearings in the Agartala Conspiracy Case started in


Dhaka's Kurmitola cantonment

4th September, 1968

Kamaluddin, an accused-turned-approver,
complained from the witness box about physical
and mental torture that he had endured while in
custody, leading the prosecution to declare him a
"hostile" witness. The emotional outburst of Hasina
Kamal, Kamaluddin's wife, in the courtroom was
hard to forget. Even the judges were moved.
Kamaluddin was released on bail later.

15th February, 1969

Sergeant Zahurul Haq and Flight


Sergeant Fazlul Haq, were shot in
the Dhaka cantonment
22nd February, 1969

Government withdrew the Agartala Conspiracy Case


and Sheikh Mujib was given his famous title
“Bangabandhu”

12th November, 1970

Bhola cyclone hits and killed approximately 5 million


people
