 ARNO converter, is specific-duty
machine for conversion of a single-
phase supply into a three-phase supply.
While the electric traction supply is
standardized as single-phase A.C.
supply, a three-phase supply is needed
on locomotives for driving auxiliary
motors of blowers and pumps.

 The function of the ARNO converter is to convert the incoming


single-phase supply into a three-phase supply for the auxiliaries.
 ARNO Converter is of vertical construction and has a
flexible mounting .The machine is of robust mechanical
construction to withstand the several vibrations
encountered on locomotives.

 Auxiliary winding is used for supplying single phase


supply to ARNO. ARNO works on split phase method to
convert single phase into three phase AC voltage of 380 ±
22.5% V. The auxiliary motors are supplied with this three-
phase voltage.
Arno Circuit
 The single phase supply of 380 volts AC is fed direct to
the 'U' and 'V’ phases of the ARNO converter. Since the
Arno converter is connected to single phase supply; no
starting torque is developed.

 For starting the 'ARNO' a split phase starting method is


employed. The ‘W’ phase winding is connected to the
supply ‘U’ phase through a starting resistor R118 and
starting contactor C118 for a short duration to start the
Arno.
 Thus unbalanced three phase voltage is impressed to each
phase winding of Arno converter and the starting torque is
developed.

 The ARNO converter picks up speed within five seconds.


After the Arno has gained sufficient speed, the ‘W’ phase is
opened from the starting circuit by starting contactor Cl18.

 If the starting phase fails to open out within 5 seconds after


ARNO has gained its rated speed there will be excessive
vibration of the ARNO and overheating of the ARNO starting
resistor. An interlock of ARNO starting resistance cut out relay
QCVAR opens Cl18 coil circuit, to protect against this.
 The neutral point 'O' of the ARNO is connected to a earth
fault relay QOA, which performs the same function as the
relay QOP, in the power circuit. The relay QOA trips the
circuit breaker DJ of the locomotive in the event of an
earth fault in the auxiliary circuit.

 The switch HQOA and RQOA perform the same


functions as the switch HQOP and resistor RQOP in the
power circuit. In addition, the relay QOA is permanently
shunted by a resistance RPQOA.
 The ARNO converts the single phase input into three
phase output as 380 V ± 22.5% The ratio of negative
sequence voltage to positive sequence voltage is within
5%. The three phase output of the Arno converter is
connected to the auxiliary motors.

 The compressor model TRC1000MN is a three cylinder,
two staged, reciprocating, air cooled & splash lubricated
compressor driven by an electric motor through a bibby/
tyre coupling.

 The crankcase of compressor is made of high grade cast


iron and houses the crankshaft assembly. The cylinders
are fitted onto it in a ‘W’ form.
 A breather valve maintains a partial vacuum in the
crankcase to facilitate better lubrication.

 The cylinder and the cylinder heads are made of high


grade cast iron to ensure high wear resistance. They have
close deep fins for effective cooling.

 The connecting rod and the crankshaft assembly is


precision machined and dynamically balanced.

 The connecting rod of crank shaft (Big end) is provided


with a double row needle roller bearing and small ends are
provided with needle roller bearings.
 The pistons are of automotive type and are of low
expansion aluminum alloy.

 Special type of concentric disc valve are used LP & HP


cylinders.

 The springs used are of high quality spring steel.

 The Inter-Cooler consist of a series of copper tubes on


which fins are wound for effective cooling. The inter-
cooler connects the discharge of the LP cylinder heads to
the HP cylinder head.
 A good quality
aluminum fan is fixed
