Working with Compressed Files in Linux

Sundeepan Sen
Unit 4 Lab:
After completing the lab, there is a better understanding of working with file compression on the

Linux OS. The operating system provides several ways to compress and decompress files, each

with its drawbacks and benefits. Tarballs in Linux enable the user to put files into a high ratio

compression archive for easy movement between disks and machines. Tarballs can also be

created using several different zips and unzip binaries. As a bonus, Linux provides tools to read a

compressed file without decompressing the entire archive.
