MSG 1
• In 1960, task force was formed as MSG for cost effective
maintenance program. It lead to ‘On Condition
Maintenance’

• Over the years MSG1, MSG2, MSG3

• MSG1. It is a Hand book “ Maintenance Evaluation and

Program Development” also known as MSG1 was
developed in 1968 for 747 by ATA

• It used design logic to develop schedule maintenance

• It used HT and OC process for development of

maintenance program
AERO DEPT
MSG 2
• MSG2. It is a document “ Operator/Manufacturer
Scheduled Maintenance” called as MSG2 was developed
by Airlines for America (A4A)

• It followed process oriented approach

• It introduced concept of “Condition Monitoring

Maintenance” concept

• Team used all the concept of HT, OC, CM processes

• It was applied to Lockheed L -1011 & McDonnell - Douglas

Dc-10 aeroplane

AERO DEPT
MSG 3
• MSG3.

• It is was published in 1980

• It used concept of Task oriented approach to Maintenance program

• Main aim was to recognise the inherent reliability of ac systems and its
components so as to avoid unnecessary maintenance task and achieve
increased efficiency

• It used concept of HT, OC processes and the concept of Zonal

Inspection Program

• Three categories of task developed by MSG3

• (a) Airframe System Tasks
• (b) Structural Items Tasks and
• (c) Zonal Tasks
AERO DEPT
MSG 3
• (a) Airframe System Tasks. Eight maintenance task were defined under
Airframe System

• (i) Lubrication

• (ii) Servicing

• (iii) Inspection

• (iv) Functional Check

• (v) Operational Check

• (vi) Visual Check

• (vii) Restoretion

• (viii) Discard

AERO DEPT
MSG 3
• (b) Structural Items Tasks. Aeroplane is subjected to three
sources of structural deterioration

• (i) Environmental Deterioration

• (ii) Accidental Damage

• (iii) Fatigue loading ( Due to Cyclic loding)

• Hence three types of inspection were defined

• (i) General Visual Inspection

• (ii) Detailed Inspection

• (iii) Special detailed Inspection

AERO DEPT
MSG 3
• (c) Zonal Tasks.
• (i) Zonal Inspection Programs means to do regular inspection
to the aircraft component according to different inspection
programs like: Corrosion Protection Program CPP, sampling
program…etc.

• (ii)These programs replace the condition monitoring in

MSG3.

• (iii) The zonal inspection programs are very important and

need to be done carefully to be effective because if not it may
affect the safety

• (iv) It ensures that all systems, components and installations

contained within a specified zone will receive adequate
surveillance to determine the security of installation and
general condition.

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• Various maintenance checks have been named and defined in MSG3
• Individual may identify interval suitable to them as long as integrity of
original maintenance task is maintained

• (a) Transit Check.

• (i) Often done jointly by Maintenance & Flight crew personal

• (ii) It includes
• Oil Level Check
• Refill of oil
• General Visual Inspection (Called a Walk Around)

– Fluid Leaks
– Open or loose panels
– Damage to control surfaces
– Damage to Antennae

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• (b) 48 Hours Check.

• (i) Performed once in 48 hours

• (ii) They are more defined than Transit Checks

• (iii) e.g.
• Wheel & Brakes Checks
• Oil level of Axillary Power Plant (APU)
• Integrated Drive Generator (IDG)
• Any Hydraulic Fluid Level etc.

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• (c) Letter Check.
• (i) After a designated number of flight hours and
pressurisation cycles, comprehensive checks are
required and called as Letter checks.
• (ii) They are performed at maintenance or engineering
base. They are 4 types A,B,C,D

• A Check
• Every 120-150 flight hours
• Consists of Visual inspection of airframe, power-
plant, avionics and accessories to certain the
general condition of the aircraft
• About (8) eight hours of ground time and about 60
man-hours
AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• (c) Letter Check.

• B Check

• Every 750 flight hours

• Include A check + selected operational check, fluid

servicing and lubrication as well as open inspection of the
panel and cowlings

• About 24 hours of ground time and about 200 man-hours

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• (c) Letter Check.

• C Check

• Every 3000 flight hours

• Include A & B checks + detailed inspection of airframe, engines and

accessories, heavy lubrication and Corrosion Prevention Program (CPM)

• Flight controls are calibrated, major internal mechanisms are tested and
service bulletins requirements are fulfilled

• About 72 hours of ground time and about 3000 man-hours

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED
• (c) Letter Check.

• D Check

• Every 20,000 flight hours

• Include removal of cabin interiors to allow detailed inspection

• Essentially stripping the aircraft to its shell and rebuilding the interior

• About 21 days of ground time and about 10,000 man-hours

AERO DEPT
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DEFINED

(d) Hourly Limit Check. Applied to system or components operating on continual basis. e.g.
Engine, Flight Control

(e) Operating Cycle Limit Checks. Applied to system or components operating on number of
cycles. e.g. Brakes, Landing gear, Tires etc.

(d) Changing Basic Maintenance Interval

• Depending upon operational requirement

• Special environment checks, e.g. flying in hot humid climate or dry desert climate
