SKILL 2

Nurse-Patient Interaction
(Process Recording)

I. Introduction:

Establishing a healthy nurse-patient interaction is vital. Nurses should greet the patient by name, make eye
contact, and display confidence and professionalism. They should explain everything they will be doing and
review the plan of care, making sure to involve them in decision making. Maintaining patient privacy is also
essential. For some patients, touch is a way to demonstrate compassion and caring, but nurses should be
aware of personal boundaries, as some patients prefer not to be touched. Remaining culturally sensitive as
well is vital; providing handouts and patient information in a patient's primary language should be offered,
as well as an interpreter if needed. These essential items help to develop trust and open the lines of
communication.

II. Learning Objectives:

1. Apply the skill of relaying information as effectively as possible.

2. Formulate questions to obtain information in each category.
3. Explain the basic communication skills needed when performing a patient interview.
4. Describe the components of the patient interview.
5. Adapt the interview technique based on the needs of the patient.

III. Core Content of the Chapter:

Sample Process Recording:

Nurse introduces himself and leads the way to office, walking slowly but slightly ahead of the patient. The
patient follows without looking at the nurse.

In the office, the nurse sits in a chair at a desk and opens a folder of papers. The patient sits in chair at
side of desk.
