Words
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At
the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning.
Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in
using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided to
our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help
you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What’s New

Read the dialog, then answer the questions that follow.

Liam is watching her Lola Maria preparing one of the

famous delicacies in the province of Bulacan, the “Pastillas de
Leche”. Her sweet tooth craves for the creamy, smooth, soft and
mouth-watering custard candy.
Liam: Lola Maria, can you teach me how to prepare “pastillas de
leche?”
Lola Maria: Of course, my child. But you need to be patient
because this candy requires time and effort. You basically
need to cook the milk to make it thick and smooth.
First, mix the fresh milk and sugar in a saucepan and boil
in medium heat until thick. Next, turn the heat off and add
butter and powdered milk. Then, cut in half inch length and
roll in sugar. Finally, wrap the pieces in cellophane or
traditional white paper.
Liam: Thank you, Lola Maria. I will surely keep your way of
preparing “pastillas de leche.”
Lola Maria: You’re always welcome, my dear Liam.

Read the following questions and write your answers on a

separate sheet of paper.

1. What is Lola Maria cooking?

2. What ingredients were used in making pastillas?
3. What attitude is needed in order to make delicious pastillas?

4
4. If you are Liam, will you be able to follow the directions given
by Lola Maria? Why?
5. What words did Lola Maria use to make her direction in
making “Pastillas de Leche” clear?

What is It

Sometimes when we want to do things, we usually got confused

and don’t know how to start. What do we do?

Just like a detective, we have to use clues! We read and look for
clues that will give us hint on how to start and accomplish things. Like
a mystery, you have to use the clues to find the answer. These clues
are called signal words.

Signal words give us clues on how to do things in various ways.

Types of Signal words in writing directions:

A. Sequence (time) words – describes events in order, serve

as guide or explains the steps one must follow to do
something or make something.
Examples: first, second, next, then, after that, finally

➢ How to wash hands:

First, wet your hands with clean running water, turn off tap and
apply soap.
Next, lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap.
Then, scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
Finally, rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

5
➢ How to make vanilla ice cream:

First, stir sugar, milk and cream in a saucepan over low heat.
Next, transfer mixture into a container. Stir in vanilla extract and
chill for 2 hours.
Then, pour cold ice cream mixture into an ice cream maker for
25 minutes.
Finally, put the ice cream in a freezer when softly frozen.

B. Location words – tell us where things can be found, its

location, and where things go in relation to each other.
