YOUTH ICON: RECOGNITION OF EMB YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS

In 2020, the Environmental Management Bureau of the DENR launched a recognition


program dubbed as “Youth Envi Icon: A Recognition of Filipino Youth Environmental
Champions” in celebration of International Youth Day. Three youth champions from the
main island of the country were awarded for demonstrating leadership and promoting
meaningful crusades in environmental management and protection.

As the EMB pursues the implementation of its mandates, the EEID intends to continue
its support thru IEC campaigns, meaningful environmental events, and working with
inspiring environmental advocates.

In partnership with the National Youth Commission, the Environmental Management


Bureau thru the EEID will again launch the nationwide search for the EMB Youth Icon for
2021.

Objectives : The activity aims to:


1. Recognize youth with outstanding contribution in environmental
management and protection;
2. Highlight youth efforts, green initiatives and contribution in
environmental conservation; and
3. Encourage and inspire more youth to be leaders and partners in
environmental protection and management.

Mechanics:

The EMB-Environmental Education and Information Division will spearhead the


conduct of the activity. The EMB thru its Regional Offices will accept entries/nominations
of youth leaders who are active in green initiatives in the community, local or national level.
Five youth champions will be recognized.

1. Nomination is open to Filipino youth leaders (18-30 years) nationwide. Self-


nomination is allowed.
2. The nominee must have demonstrated leadership and has shown inspiring work
on one of the following: air quality management, water quality management,
solid waste management, toxic and hazardous waste and chemical management,
climate change, and environmental education. Participants should submit only
one major project chosen among stated categories.
3. The nominee must be involved in the program for a minimum of two years and
continues to inspire members of his/her community towards environmental
management and protection.
4. Initiatives/programs/project must show a net positive impact to community that can
be validated by proofs, documentary evidence, and references.
5. Requirements:
a. Duly filled-out entry/nomination form
b. Profile or CV of the nominee
c. Proof of project/program/initiative such as project proposal and report,
photos, certificates, etc
d. Photo of the nominee (1 profile photo) and AVP (of the nominee and his
initiatives). Photo should be in JPG or PNG formats. The AVP in MP4 or MPEG
format must run for a minimum of 3 minutes but not exceed 5 minutes.
e. At least two letters of reference of testimonials written by individuals other than
the nominator who can attest to the contributions and achievements of the
nominee (preferably partners or beneficiaries of the project). Family
members and/or relatives are not allowed to provide testimonials for the
nominee.
6. The nomination is to be sent to the respective email addresses of the concerned EMB
Regional Offices on or before July 12, 2021.
7. EMB Regional Offices will endorse at most five regional nominees to the EEID on
or before July 30, 2021.
8. Regional nominees will be judged by the Youth Icon National Board of Judges.
They will shortlist 10 finalists from all the nominations received. Finalists will be
invited for an interview.
9. Five youth champions will be recognized and will receive a plaque and
Php20,000.00 prizes as assistance to their initiatives. Youth champions will also be
invited for IEC activities of the EMB and will be featured in the EMB Facebook
Page.
10. The National Youth Commission will also recognize youth champions through the
following special awards:

KALAKASAN Award

The KALAKASAN Award of honors outstanding young Filipino trailblazers and


their contributions (Active Citizenship) to community development and nation
building through active, meaningful, sustainable, productive, and patriotic
engagement in civil society, social mobilization, volunteerism (for the protection
and conservation of coastal, marine ecosystems, and communities), and values
formation.

Youth in Climate Action Award

The youth in Climate Action Award recognizes the most innovative but replicable
youth-led climate action that addresses environmental protection, climate change
adaptation and mitigation; and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and
actions that showcase initiatives in line with the Top 10 Youth-led Climate Action:

1. Grow a tree
2. Practice urban gardening
3. Utilize rainwater
4. Contribute and share eco-data
5. Leave no trace when traveling
6. Walk, bike, carpool
7. Consume responsibly
8. Promote renewable energy
9. Promote environmental and energy consciousness
10. Refuse single use plastic

SK Idol Award

The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Idol Award recognizes innovative SK related


environmental programs and projects and their transformative impact on the
environment and the community.

11. Lack or non-compliance of requirements will result in automatic disqualification.


12. Previous national awardees are discouraged to send his/her nomination.
13. All decisions of the screening committee and Board of Judges are final. No
appeal/correspondence pertaining to these decisions shall be entertained.
14. All materials submitted automatically become property of the EMB.
Criteria for Judging:

The following criteria shall be used by the judges in evaluating and judging the
nominees to determine the awardees:
