saying as she dropped her off at her new ballet class. “Just
try your hardest and ask Miss Patty when you need help.”

But as Jade sat in class watching the other
girls do perfect pirouettes, she felt like a fail-
ure. Miss Patty had showed everyone how to
do the kind-of-complicated spin last week,
but every time Jade tried to do one, she fell
right over!
Jade watched anxiously as everyone in the
class got up to practice their turns in front
of the mirror. She checked the clock and
breathed a sigh of relief when she saw it was
4:59 pm. Class ended at 5 o’clock, and she
wasn’t the only one who hadn’t performed

Jade grabbed her dance bag, knowing she
should gather up the courage to ask Miss Pat-
ty for some pirouette pointers. But it was just
too embarrassing! Even though she was in a
beginner’s class, it felt like everyone picked up
new moves better than her.
She was just about to leave the room when
she felt someone tap her on the shoulder.
“Hey, Jade,” a redheaded girl from class
smiled. “Are you going to freestyle class? I
think I’m going to check it out today. Oh, I’m

“I’m sure it isn’t as bad as you think,” Jade’s
mom continued. “You’re always so hard on
yourself. If you want, I can call Miss Patty and
ask her about working with you after class.”

Jade almost made it all the way around before

she felt herself begin to fall and had to grab the
barre for balance.

“Miss Patty might even help you with your
pirouettes afterward,” Ashley continued.
“She’s been helping ...”
Jade stopped listening, upset that Ashley
noticed she needed extra help. “Sorry, I can’t
tonight,” she said with a tight smile and a
bright red face. She ran out of the dance stu-
dio before Ashley could get in another word.
“How’d it go today?” her mom asked as she
got into the car.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Jade mut-
tered.

“No” Jade straightened up in the backseat.
“Mom, no! That’d be so embarrassing. I can
handle it. I’ll just practice at home before
next week’s class.”
And she really meant to — but between
homework and weekend plans, she never
got around to it. Before she knew it, she was
sitting in another ballet class feeling unpre-
pared. And she was beginning to think Miss
Patty had noticed.
“What happened to your smile, Jade?” the
teacher questioned as Jade practiced doing
leaps across the room. “Ballet is supposed to
be fun!”
But Jade wasn’t having fun. While the next
student was doing their leaps, she sent her
mom a quick text saying she was going to
stay after class.
“I’m so glad you finally decided to ask for
help!” her mom replied. Jade hadn’t asked for ticed the light was still on and sent me in to
help, but she didn’t want her mom to know
that.
She waited until everyone else had left the
room, turned the lights back on and started
practicing her pirouettes alone.
You can do this, Jade, she gave herself a
mental pep talk as she picked up her right
leg and began to spin. She almost made it all
the way around before she felt herself begin
to fall and had to grab the barre for balance.
“Is anyone in here? Oh, it’s you,” Jade heard
a familiar voice behind her.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Ashley
said, looking sheepish. “Miss Patty just no-
turn it off.”
“I ... I ... this is so embarrassing,” Jade put
her face in her hands.
“Embarrassing? Why?” Ashley questioned.
“I’m the only one in class who can’t do this
turn!”
“Well, that just isn’t true,” Ashley returned.

“But even if it was, who cares?”
“I do! I’ll make a fool of myself in front of
everyone if I try this in class, but no matter
what I try, I never get any better.”
“I don’t think you pay enough attention to
everyone else doing their turns,” Ashley said,

first time we learned,” Jade finished as she
came to the realization.
“Yeah, it’s kind of funny because you’re so
good at everything else,” Ashley smiled. “I
wish I could leap across the room as high as

“Yeah, everybody does,” Ashley laughed.
“That’s why Miss Patty had you go first today.
She used you as an example.”
“I didn’t even realize,” Jade said. “I was so
worried we’d have to do pirouettes again at
the end of class.”
“Well, you lucked out today,” Ashley gig-
gled, then she looked over at Jade question-
ingly. “Do you have to run home again? I’m
only asking because I think I know something
that would help you out.”
“No, I can stay,” Jade said. “Sorry about last
week by the way. I was just upset that you ...”
But Ashley waved her off, clearly not want-
ing to make a big deal about it. She grabbed
Jade’s hand and brought her down the hall.
The duo walked into another classroom.
Jade saw kids of all ages dancing around
the room — no two doing the exact same
move. And if she wasn’t mistaken, there was
yodeling coming from speakers.
“What is this?!” she asked Ashley.
“This is Freestyle Fun ... where anything
goes!” Ashley laughed. “Isn’t it the best? It
really helped me remember why I wanted to
start dance classes in the first place — be-
cause I love to dance, even when I’m not best asked in a teasing voice.

Ashley went right to the center of the
room and started flossing. It was clear she
didn’t care what anyone thought of her
moves. And as Jade looked around, it seemed
like no one else did either — even Miss Patty,
who winked at her while she did the chicken
dance in the corner.
Jade laughed as she joined Ashley at the
front of the class and began to dance like she
used to in her bedroom ... like no one was
watching!
“You sure you don’t want to go back to
practicing pirouettes on your own?” Ashley
Jade looked at her new friend and grinned.
“Nah, Miss Patty can help me next week dur-
ing class. I’m ready to get my groove on!”
