Impact of the pandemic on Summer Internships
· Multiple companies revoked internship offers made to students due to their inability to work in
office

· Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, most companies faced a great number of challenges
due to which they were unable to welcome interns this season

· Apart from this, most students had a completely virtual internship experience in a work from
home setting, which had its own challenges leading to extreme pressure amongst the students

However,

· Most students have started updating their status on LinkedIn to request for internships which
led recruiters to reach out to them and offer help

· Students of the 2020-2022 batch have also made attempts to help their batchmates by creating
pages for the sole purpose of assisting students with their Summer Internships

· Companies like Bain & Co., BCG have offered PPO’s to all of their Summer Interns and the
students are now reaping the benefits of the hard work they had put in over the course of their
internship which is a great boost amidst the ongoing crisis

Impact of Stress within an Organization
Post-2008 Financial crisis, Calibra Net Informatics Ltd was trying to enhance its performance,
increase its productivity and goodwill and the employees were expected to work hard and be
motivated towards their work. The technical director and the other employees of the company were
working so hard that they started developing health problems and began taking sick leaves from
work.

This company did not manage stress management, there was a lot of pressure of work upon the
technical managing director and it was not divided amongst all the other employees, the tasks
were overlapping amongst the heads of departments.

In order to effectively deal with these kinds of stressful situations, a workshop was conducted that
emphasized and clearly disclosed the problems. The stress factors became visible and known to all
the employees and employers and it is understood that all the problems and difficulties were
arising from the inappropriate organizational structure.

Another workshop held to analyze the problems and find their solutions, stress management
training was organized, and then after half a year outcomes were measured; the profitability was
increasing while the number of sick leave days dropped back to half, work satisfaction
questionnaire depicted good results as well.

WFH changing the working dynamics?
While Work From Home(WFH) is not new as few organisations have already been
practicing it even before the outbreak of Covid-19. But now post pandemic is WFH the
new normal?

Adapting to this new setup has been met with a few challenges by the employees like :
Work life imbalance, Increased workload has been alleviating stress which in turn is
affecting their mental health, Social Isolation, Salary Cuts and no Bonuses.

According to a Bloomberg report, the onset of the pandemic showed a 3 hour increase in
work hours due to the WFH setting. Almost 6 months later, the situation has become even
more adverse with employees complaining of working for a whopping 14-18 hours a day.

What needs to be done : Understanding employee needs and problems by encouraging

them to share their experiences, help employees staying connected with each other, have
a 24x7 counsellor to help with mental health or any other issues.

Swiggy has announced a ‘4 working days a week’ initiative to address mental and
physical health for all of its employees.

Another example would be that of Borosil wherein they have announced that the family
of any employee of their company will be given 2 years of salary in the event of an
unfortunate demise owing to Covid 19. In addition to this, the education of the children of
the employee will be paid till graduation in India.
