The Meanings of the Salat (Prayer)

It is vital to keep the meaning of the Salat in mind while praying. Think about what each of the meanings signify,
and the inner importance of each word, and realize that this is just a superficial translation; there are layers and layers
upon meanings for each Du’a/Surah/phrase. Surah meanings are omitted here.

Arabic Transliteration English Translation


"Subhana Kal-lah hum-ma wabi hamdika "Glory be to you oh Allah, and Praise.
wata-bara kasmuka wata'ala jad-duka Blessed be Your name and exalted be Your majesty. There
wala ilaha ghyruka.” is no god but You"
“A'udhu bil-lahi minash Shayta-nir-rajeem” "I seek Allah's shelter from Satan, the condemned"
"Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Raheem” "In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful."
"Alhamdul lil-lahi rab-bil 'alameen "Praise be to Allah, the Sustainer of the Worlds;
Ar rahma nir-raheem Most Gracious, Most Merciful;
Maliki yawmid-deen Master of the Day of Judgment.
Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een Only you do we worship, and only your help we seek
Ihdinas siratal mustaqeem Show us the straight way
Siratal Ladheena an'amta 'alayhim The way of those whom you bestowed your Grace,
Ghai-ril maghdubi 'alayhim Those whose (portion) is not wrath
Walad dal-leen. (Ameen)" And who go not astray."
"Sub-hana Rabbi-al 'azeem" “Glorified is my Lord, the Almighty”
"Sami 'allah hu liman hamida. "Allah listens to him who praises Him"
"Rab-bana lakal hamd" "Our Lord, praise be for you only”
"Allah u Akbar" "Allah is the greatest"
“Sub-hana Rabbi yal a'la” “Glory to Allah, the Exalted"
"At-tahiy-yatu lil-lahi was sala-watu wat-tay "All our salutations are for Allah, and prayers, and good
yibatu. As-salamu 'alayka ay-yuhan-nabiy-yu deeds. Peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be on you, O
wa rahma tullahi wa bara-katuhu Prophet. May peace be upon us and on the devout slaves
As-salamu 'alayna wa'ala 'ibadil-la his-sali-heen” of Allah.”
“Ash hadu al-la ilaha il-lal lahu “I testify that there is no god but Allah
wa ash hadu an-na Muhammadan and I testify that Muhammad
'ab-duhu wa rasuluh.” is His slave and messenger".
"Allah humma sal-li 'ala Muhammadin "Oh Allah send your Mercy on Muhammad
wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, and his posterity
Kama sal-layta 'ala Ibraheema as you sent Your mercy on Abraham
Wa'ala ahli Ibraheema and his posterity.
innaka Hameedum Majeed You are the Most Praised, The Most Glorious.

Allah humma barik 'ala Muhammadin Oh Allah, send your Blessings on Muhammad
wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, and his posterity
Kama barakta 'ala Ibraheema as you have blessed Abraham
Wa 'ala ahli Ibraheema and his posterity.
innaka Hameedum Majeed.” You are the Most praised, The Most Glorious".
“Rubbana ‘atayna fi dunya hasanatuh, wa fil Our Lord, grant us the good of this world and of the
akheratay hasanatuh, wa qina a'zaban nar.” Hereafter and save us from the torture of the Fire
"As-salamu 'alaykum wa rah-matul lah". "Peace and mercy of Allah be on you".
