ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 10

Grade: __10___ Week: __3___ Quarter: __4___

I. Objective: The learner interprets measures of position. (M10SP-IVc-1)

II. Input/Discussion:
Definition of Terms:
Quartile – the score points that divides the distribution into 4 equal parts.
Decile – the score points that divides the distribution into 10 equal parts.
Percentile – the score points that divides the distribution into 100 equal parts.

Measures of position give us a way to see where a certain data point or value falls in a
sample or distribution. A measure can tell us whether a value is about the average, or
whether it's unusually high or low. Measures of position are used for quantitative data
that falls on some numerical scale.

Interpretation of this data is important for us to have an idea about how did we perform in
a certain situation. This will tell us if we did poorly, good, better, or maybe best in a task.

Example 1:
In a race, you finished on the position of the Q3. What is your performance in the race?

- Since your position is on Q3, it means that 75% of the participants finished the race
behind you and 25% of the participants finished ahead of you. Therefore, you did
good during the race.

Example 2:
Mrs. Labonete gave a test to her students in Statistics. The students finished their test in
35 minutes. This time is the 2.5th decile of the allotted time. What does this mean? D2.5

- This means that 25% of the learners finished the test. A low quartile considered good,
because it means the students finished the test in a short period of time.

III. Practice Task

Interpret the given situation on measures of position.
1. In a line in the supermarket, you are in the 9th decile. What does it mean? o This
means that ____% of the people in line is behind you and ____% is in front of you. This
is ______ (good, not good) because _________________.
2. A painter painted a house and finished it in the in the 1st quartile of the expected
accomplishment time. What is the performance of the painter?
3. Anthony is a secretary in one big company in metro manila, his salary is in the 7th
decile. Should Anthony be glad about his salary or not? Explain your answer.

IV. Evaluation:
A. Multiple Choice: Choose the letter of the correct answer from the situations below. 1. In
a math summative test, your score is the 3rd quartile of the score of the test. How did you
perform in the test?
a. Good, because I got above 75% of the total score.
b. Not so good, because I only got 75% of the total score.
c. My score is bad because I got one-third of the total score.
d. I failed because I did not reach the passing grade which is 75%.
2. A farmer was able to finish planting a palay in 2 hours. The time is the 80th percentile
of the time he managed to plant the palay last year. Did he improve when it comes to
his speed in planting the palay?
a. Yes, because he was able to decrease his working time by 20%.
b. Yes, because he was able to decrease his working time by 80%.
c. No, because his working time increased by 20%.
d. No, because his working time increased by 80%.
3. During Bicol Meet, the 25th percentile for time to finish the 10-meter dash race was
13.5 seconds. This implies that _________.
a. 75% of the runners finished the race at 13.5 seconds or less
b. 50% of the runners finished the race at 13.5 seconds or less
c. 25% of the runners finished the race at 13.5 seconds or less
d. No runner was able to finish the race at 13.5 seconds or less
B. Interpretation: Interpret the situation below on the measures of position. Philippines
is ranking in the 8th decile of the country with most COVID-19 cases in southeast
Asia on the early stage of the pandemic. As of (December, 2020), Philippines is
on the 9th decile in rank of the southeast Asian countries with most COVID-19
cases. What can you say about the rank of the Philippines as of December,
2020?
