What is this course about?


Examines the key principles of pharmacology science that inform pharmacotherapeutics. Focuses on drug development and
clinical drug trials, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, adverse drug reactions and developmental pharmacology.

How is this course taught?


Location: On campus at North Campus, AUT OR fully online
Teaching period: Offered in Semester 1 only
Block course: For the on-campus option there are two days spaced approximately 6 weeks apart
Teaching style: Lectures (study days) plus facilitated online discussions using problem-based learning and application of
concepts to the students own clinical practice.

Who will be teaching me?


Course Coordinator: Gael Mearns, RN, BN, PgDipSc, MHSc, PhD
Gael is Head of Postgraduate Programmes and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical Sciences. She has 20 years’
experience with teaching pharmacology, biological sciences, and nutrition in postgraduate and undergraduate programmes
at AUT. Gael’s research interests focus on the broad context of public health nutrition and on life- course approaches for
reducing the risk for non-communicable disease. Her research expertise includes mixed methods, qualitative descriptive,
quantitative, and grounded theory approaches, randomized controlled trials, and psychometric testing of questionnaires.
