1. Jacob places a stick of length 41 cm against the end points of a circular window and finds that the
shortest distance between the mid point of the stick and the boundary of the window is 8 cm. The
diameter of the window is

(a) 60 cm (b) 48 cm (c) 58 cm (d) 64 cm

Ans (c)
Sol Let the radius of the window be r cm
 (r – 8)2 + (20)2 = r2
 –16r + 64 + 400 = 0
 r = 29
 The diameter of the window is 58 cm

2. AB is a diameter of a circle with centre O and radius OD is perpendicular to AB. If C is any point on
arc DB, then respective measures of BAD and ACD are
(a) 45o, 45o (b) 30o, 45o (c) 45o, 60o (d) None of these
Ans (a)
Sol: Since chord DB makes BOD at the centre and BAD at A.
1 1
BAD = BOD =  ( 90 ) = 45
2 2
Similarly, Chord AD makes AOD at the centre & ACD at C.
1 1
 ACD = AOD =  ( 90 ) = 45 o
2 2
3. If A, B, C are three points on a circle with centre O such that ∠AOB = 90o and ∠BOC = 120o, then
find ∠ABC.
(a) 60o (b) 75o (c) 80o (d) 90o
Ans: (b)
Sol:

 AOC = AOB + BOC

 AOC = 90° + 120°

 AOC = 210°
Now, ABC = 1/2 reflex AOC
 ABC = 1/2 (360° – 210°)
 ABC = 1/2 x 150°
 ABC = 75°
4. Two circles of radii 5 cm and 3 cm intersect at two points and the distance between their centres is
4 cm. Find the length of the common chord.
(a) 5.4 cm (b) 5.8 cm (c) 6 cm (d) 6.3 cm
Ans: (c)
Sol: Let PQ be the common chord of the two circles having their centres at C1 and C2.
Then,
C1P = 5 cm, C2P = 3 cm and C1C2 = 4 cm
We have,
52 = 42 + 32
i.e., C1P2 = C1C22 + C2P2
 ∠C1C2P = 90°
 C2 lies on the common chord PQ and it bisects PQ.
Since C1C2 is perpendicular to PQ and line segment joining the centres of two circles bisects the
common chord. Therefore, C2 is the mid-point of PQ.
Hence, PQ = 2C2P = 2 × 3 cm = 6 cm.
5. In figure, A, B, and C are three points on a circle such that the angles subtended by the chords AB
and AC at the centre O are 90° and 110°, respectively. Determine BAC.

(a) 100o (b) 160o (c) 80o (d) 60o

Ans: (c)
Sol: We have,

BOA = 90° and AOC = 110°

 BOC = 360° – (BOA + AOC)
 BOC = 360° – (90° + 110°) = 160°
Now, BAC = 1/2 BOC
 BAC = 1/2 x 160° = 80°
6. A chord of a circle is equal to the radius of the circle. Find the angle subtended by the chord at a
point on the minor arc and also at a point on the major arc.
(a) 30o , 120o (b) 150o, 30o (c) 120o, 30o (d) 30o, 150o
Ans: (b)
Sol: Let AB be a chord of the circle with centre at O such that OA = OB = AB.
Clearly, OAB is equilateral.

 AOB = 60°
 ACB = 1/2 AOB = 30°
Consider arc ACB. Clearly, it makes 360° - 60° = 300° at the centre O.
1 1
 ADB = ( relfex AOB) =  300 = 150
2 2
7. If O is the circumcentre of a ABC and OD ⊥ BC, then BOD =
(a) A (b) A/2 (c) 2A (d) None
Ans: (a)

Sol: Join OB and OC.

In OBD and OCD, we have

OB = OC [Each equal to the radius of circumcircle]
ODB = ODC [Each equal to 90°]
and, OD = OD [Common]
OBD  OCD
 BOD =  COD
 BOC = 2 BOD = 2COD
Now, arc BC subtends BOC at the centre and BAC = A at a point in the remaining part of the
circle
BOC = 2 A
 2BOD = 2A
 BOD = A
8. In the given figure, if OA = 5 cm, AB = 8 cm and OD is perpendicular to AB, then CD is equal to
(a) 1 cm (b) 2 cm (c) 3 cm (d) 4 cm

Sol: The perpendicular drawn from the center to a chord bisect the chord
1 1
AC =  AB =  8 = 4cm
2 2

OC = OA 2 − AC2

= 52 − 4 2

= 25 − 16

= 9 =3
OC = 3 cm
Now CD = OD – OC
= 5 cm – 3 cm
= 2 cm
9. Distance of chord AB of a circle from the center is 12 cm and length of the chord is 10 cm. Then
diameter of the circle is
(a) 26 cm (b) 13 cm
(c) 244 cm (d) 20 cm
Ans: (a)
Sol: Perpendicular from centre to the chord bisects the chord
AL = 5 cm, OL = 12 cm
AO = (12) − ( 5) 2  144 + 25  169
2

 AO = 13cm
Radius = 13 cm, Diameter = 26 cm

10. ABC is a triangle with B as right angle, AC = 5 cm and AB = 4 cm. A circle is drawn with A as
centre and AC as radius. The length of the chord of this circle passing through C and B is
(a) 4 cm (b) 3 cm
(c) 5.6 cm (d) 6 cm
Ans: (d)
Sol:

Given that AC = radius = 5 cm

AB = 4 cm
∵ DC is chord passing through B and C.
In ΔABC,
⇒ AC2 = AB2 + BC2
⇒ 52 = 42 + BC2
⇒ BC2 = 25 - 16
⇒ BC2 = 9
⇒ BC = 3 cm
Chord DC = 2 x BC = 2 x 3 = 6 cm
Thus, the length of chord is 6 cm.
11. The length of a chord which is at a distance of 4 cm. from the centre of a circle of radius 6 cm. will
be -
(a) 4 5 cm (b) 3 5 cm (c) 2 5 cm (d) 5 5 cm
Ans: (a)
Sol:

In ΔODA
= AD = 𝑥 = 36 − 16 = 20 = 2 5 cm

Then AB = 2 AD = 4 5 cm.
12. In the given figure, if O is the centre of the circle, then BC is equal to

AB + AC
(a) 2 (OD) (b) OD + OA (c) (d) AB.AC
2
Ans (a)
Sol. In OAD and CAB,

ODA = CBA = 90° [CBA = 90° Angle in semi circle]

A = A [common]
 OAD ~ CAB [By AA similarity]
1 OD
 =
2 BC
 BC = 2OD
