1 Introduction to Interlocking

In railway signalling, an interlocking is an arrangement of signal apparatus that prevents


conflicting movements through an arrangement of tracks such as junctions or crossings.
The signalling appliances and tracks are sometimes collectively referred to as an
interlocking plant. An interlocking is designed so that it is impossible to display a signal
to proceed unless the route to be used is proven safe.

1-8 Materials
All materials used for the work shall be of the best grade of the respective kinds and as
described in these specifications.
The contractor shall submit for the approval of the Engineer a list of the names and
addresses of the manufacturers, trademarks and types of all materials and articles he
proposes to comply, together with all specifications and description that may be required in
this connection before any orders are placed.

1-9 Workmanship
The whole of the works shall be carried out to the Consulting Engineer's satisfaction
thorough engineering and workmanlike manner in accordance with the drawings and the
specification. The work shall be carried out in such a manner as may be directed by the
Engineer.
