EARTH SCIENCE
Quarter 4 - Module 5
Solar Eclipse

Page | 1
What I Need to Know
Eclipse is an event when the moon’s shadow hits the Earth. A solar eclipse happens in the daytime. It
occurs during the new moon when it is between the Earth and the sun.
While a total solar eclipse seems to give a once-in-a lifetime experience, they are not seriously unusual.
However, it is a common mistake that the occurrence of a total eclipse of the sun is a rare event.
After going through this module, you are expected to explain how solar eclipse and lunar eclipse
occur. (S7ES-IVj-12 according to CG 2016)
Specifically, you are also expected to:
1. describe a solar eclipse;
2. Create a model showing a solar eclipse.
In going through this module, you have to extend your patience in understanding and analyzing what you are
reading. Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities. Answer the entire given tests and exercises
carefully. Answer the required activities provided.

Activity 1: Why do seasons change?
Directions: Read and answer the given guide questions on the ANSWER SHEET provided.

Study Figure 1 carefully. It shows the Earth at different locations along its orbit around the sun. Note that the axis of the
Earth is not perpendicular to its plane of orbit; it is tilted. The letter “N” refers to the North Pole while “S” refers to the South
Pole.

What is It
Solar eclipse happens when the sun, the moon and the Earth are aligned and blocked the sunlight from
reaching the Earth. It will only take place at the phase of thenew moon and will occur if the two ecliptic nodes
meet. There are two types of solar eclipses: partial solar eclipse and the total solar eclipse.

Two distinct parts of the Earth’s shadow during a solar eclipse:

1. Umbra – refers to the darkest part of the moon’s shadow formed on theEarth where a total solar eclipse
is seen
2. Penumbra – refers to the lighter part of the moon’s shadow formed on theEarth where a partial solar
eclipse is visible
