Tasks:: Figure 1 An Example Assembly
There is a requirement to power a centrifugal pump with an electric motor (and a layshaft to
transmit the power from motor to pump). The layshaft must also have a reduction ratio to
provide the required speed at the pump. Configuration and transmission type must be chosen.
All components specified and the shaft must be analysed at all stages of design to ensure it
will not fail under load.
Specification:
The electric motor to be specified must not be geared; the two-stage transmission
must perform any required ratio.
The projected life for the assembly is 8 years at 280 days a year and 8 hours a day.
Electric supply: 3 phase AC which implies 415 volts at 50 Hz frequency
The system will only pump water
The pump has an operational power of 11.67kW, and a rotational speed of 150rpm.
There are a few specified locations for drive components and bearing supports as
shown in figure 2.
The layout dimensions are shown in figure 3.
No gears are permitted to be used in the system.
The axial dimensions have a tolerance of ±15 mm
The centre distances between motor, pump and shaft a tolerance of ±30 mm.
The shaft material will be AISI 1016 Steel.
The shaft will be initially manufactured using a lathe, and the retention features such
as keyways will be machined using a vertical milling machine.
