QUALIFYING EXAM
Engineering Sciences

Answer the following problems and show your complete solutions

Problem 1:
Block B weighs 200 N and block C weighs 100 N.
a. Determine the required weight of block D for equilibrium
b. Determine the required angle 𝜃 for equilibrium.

Problem 2:
Find the reaction at A due to the uniform loading and the
applied moment at the end support

Problem 3:
Determine the magnitude and direction of the moment of the
force of the movement if the force at A about point P

Problem 4:
Determine the distance 𝑦̅ to the centroidal
axis ̅̅̅
𝑋𝑥 of the beam's cross-sectional are
Problem 5:
The refrigerator has a weight of 200 lb and a center of gravity at G.
Determine the force P required to move it. Will the refrigerator tip or slip?
Take 𝜇 = 0.40

Problem 6:
A basket and its contents weigh 10 lb. A 20-lb monkey grabs the other end
of the rope and very quickly (almost instantaneously) accelerates by pulling hard on
the rope until he is moving with a constant speed of vm/r = 2 ft/s measured relative to
the rope. The monkey then continues climbing at this constant rate relative to the
rope for 3 seconds. How fast is the basket rising at the end of the 3 seconds?
Neglect the mass of the pulley and the rope.

Problem 7:
A car starts from rest and reaches a speed of 42 m/s in 15 seconds. The acceleration (initially zero)
increases uniformly for the first 9 seconds after which is remained constant. What is the distance travelled by the car
after 15 seconds?

Problem 8:
Neglecting air resistance, what minimum initial velocity must a rocket be fired to hit a target that is 5 km
away?

Problem 9:
A Ferris wheel, 11 m in radius, is rotating such that the riders will experience zero gravity at the topmost part
of the wheel. How many revolutions does it made in every minute?

Problem 10.
A projectile is fired 80 m above the level plane and reaches a horizontal distance of 650 m on that level
plane. What is the initial velocity of the projectile if it is fired upward at an angle of 350 with the horizontal?

Problem 11:
The bowstring has an unstretched length of 850mm and cross sectional area of
400mm2. It is recorded as that the stress of the upper segment of the bowstring is
50MPa.
a. Determine the average normal strain the string
b. Determine the applied pull of the archer on the arrow
c. Determine the tension acting on the lower segment of the string.
Problem 12:
The shear diagram for a beam is
given below:

a. Which of the following most nearly gives the maximum concentrated load?
b. Which of the following most nearly gives the maximum negative moment in the beam?
c. Which of the following most nearly gives the location of the point of contraflexure from the right end of the
beam?

Problem 13:
A solid steel shaft 60 mm in diameter as shown is subjected to torques as shown in the figure. The modulus
of rigidity of the steel G= 83 GPa.
a. Which of the following most nearly gives the reaction at the rigid support?
b. Which of the following most nearly gives the maximum torsional stress in the shaft?
c. Which of the following most nearly gives the angle of twist at the
