Lesson 1: Inscribed Angles and Its Intercepted Arcs
Learning Competencies: Proves theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles and inscribed
angles (M10 GE – IIc-d-1)

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

 find the measure of inscribed angles and its intercepted arcs
 prove theorems on inscribed angles and intercepted arc
 solve problems involving chords, arcs, central angles and inscribed angles of a circle

What is it
Inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the
circle. The arc that lies in the interior of an inscribed angle and has endpoints on the angle is called the
intercepted arc of the angle.
Like central angles, the measures of inscribed angles are related to the measures of their
intercepted arcs. This relationship is given in the following theorem.

Inscribed Angle Theorem: “The measure of an inscribed angle is half the measure of its intercepted
arc.”

Example 1: In the accompanying figure m AC = 70°. Find the measure of ∠𝑨𝑩𝑪.

Solution:
1
m∠ABC = 𝑚 AC
2
1
= (70°)
2
𝐦∠𝐀𝐁𝐂 = 𝟑𝟓°

Example 2: If 𝑚 𝐴𝐵 = 80°, 𝑚 𝐵𝐶 = 50° and 𝑚 𝐶𝐷 = 90°, find 𝑚 ∠𝐵 and 𝑚 ∠𝐶.

Solution:
𝑚 𝐴𝐷 + 𝑚 𝐴𝐵 + 𝑚 𝐵𝐶 + 𝑚 𝐶𝐷 = 360°
𝑚 𝐴𝐷 = 360° − (𝑚 𝐴𝐵 + 𝑚 𝐵𝐶 + 𝑚 𝐶𝐷 )
= 360° − (80° + 50° + 90°)
= 360 − 220
𝒎 𝑨𝑫 = 𝟏𝟒𝟎°
1
𝑚 ∠𝐵 = 𝑚 𝐴𝐷 𝑚 ∠𝐶 = 𝑚 ∠𝐵
2
1
𝑚 ∠𝐵 = (140) 𝒎 ∠𝑪 = 𝟕𝟎°
2
𝒎 ∠𝑩 = 𝟕𝟎°

What’s More
Directions: Use the given figure to answer the following. ∆𝐺𝑂𝐴 is inscribed in ⊙L.
If m ∠OGA = 75° and m AG = 160°, find:
1. m 𝑂𝐴
2. m 𝑂𝐺
3. m ∠𝐺𝑂𝐴
4. m ∠𝐺𝐴𝑂

160°

Lesson 2: Theorems on Inscribed Angles and Its Intercepted Arcs

What is it
Inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the
circle. The arc that lies in the interior of an inscribed angle and has endpoints on the angle is called the
intercepted arc of the angle.

Theorems on Inscribed Angles

1. If an angle is inscribed in a circle, then the measure of the angle equals one-half the
measure of its intercepted arc (or the measure of the intercepted arc is twice the
measure of the inscribed angle).
̂ is its
Example: In the figure on the right, ∠𝐴𝐶𝑇 is an inscribed angle and 𝐴𝑇
intercepted arc.
̂ = 120, then m∠𝐴𝐶𝑇 = 60.
If m𝐴𝑇

2. If two inscribed angles of a circle (or congruent circles) intercept congruent arcs
or the same arc, then the angles are congruent.
Example1: In figure 1, ∠𝑃𝐼𝑂 and ∠𝑃𝐿𝑂 intercept 𝑃𝑂. ̂
Since ∠𝑃𝐼𝑂 and ∠𝑃𝐿𝑂 intercept the same
arc, the two angles, then, are congruent.
Example 2: In figure 2 above, ∠𝑆𝐼𝑀 and ∠𝐸𝐿𝑃 intercept
̂ and EP,
SM ̂ respectively. If SM
̂ ≅ EP̂ , then
∠SIM ≅ ∠ELP

3. If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a semicircle, then

the angle is a right angle.
Example: In the figure, ∠NTEintercepts NSÊ .If NSE
̂ is a
semicircle, then ∠NTE is a right angle.

4. If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its opposite angles are supplementary.

Example: Quadrilateral DREA is inscribed in ⊙M.
m∠RDA + m∠REA = 180.
m∠DRA + m∠DAE = 180.

Lesson 3: Problems Involving Chords, Arcs, Central Angles and Inscribed
Angles of a Circle

What is it
Let’s us apply our knowledge on central angle and inscribed angles and intercepted arcs in
solving the following problems.
1. Of the given figure at the right, m∠DAG = 38°, find the measure of ∠𝐷𝐹𝐺?
Solution:
1
𝑚∠𝐷𝐴𝐺 = (𝑚 𝐷𝐺 ) Inscribed Angle Theorem
2
1
38° = (𝑚 𝐷𝐺 ) by substitution
2
38°(2) = 𝑚 𝐷𝐺 multiply both sides by 2
𝑚 𝐷𝐺 = 76° simplify

𝑚 ∠𝐷𝐹𝐺 = 𝑚 𝐷𝐺 measure of a central angle is equal to its intercepted arc

𝑚 ∠𝐷𝐹𝐺 = 76° by substitution
Therefore, the measure of ∠𝐷𝐹𝐺 is 𝟕𝟔°.

2. If 𝑁𝑀𝑆 is a semicircle and 𝑚 𝑁𝑀 ≅ 𝑚 𝑀𝑆, find the following:

a. 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀
b. 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑆𝑀
Solutions:
a. m 𝑁𝑀𝑆 = 180° The degree measure of a semicircle is 180⁰
m 𝑁𝑀 = 90° half of 180⁰
1
𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀 = (𝑚 𝑁𝑀 ) Inscribed Angle Theorem
2
1
𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀 = (90° ) by substitution
2
𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀 = 45° simplify
Therefore, 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀 is 𝟒𝟓°.

b. 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑆𝑀 = 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑅𝑀 Two inscribed angles intercept the same arc are congruent.
𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑆𝑀 = 45° by substitution
Therefore, 𝑚 ∠𝑁𝑆𝑀 is 𝟒𝟓°.
