ACTIVITY CARD

ACTIVITY 1: Getting to Know Video Editing

To carry out our mission of helping

Mr. Carl, you also have to know
more about the video editing.

Video editing is the process of ma-

nipulating and rearranging video
shots to create a new work.

Editing is much more than choosing shots. You’ll

choose your cuts precisely, place clips in se-
quences at exactly the right point in time and on
the tracks you want (to create layered visual ef-
fects), add new clips to existing sequences, and
x
get rid of unwanted content.
Now that you have ideas
about what is video edit-
ing, let’s move on and find
out what are the goals of
editing. Kindly read the
information inside the box
below.

Goals of Editing

There are many reasons to edit a video and your editing approach
will depend on the desired outcome. Before you begin, you must
clearly define your editing goals, which could include any of the fol-
lowing:
Remove unwanted footage

This is the simplest and most common task in editing. Many videos can
be dramatically improved by simply getting rid of the flawed or un-
wanted bits.
Choose the best footage

It is common to shoot far more footage than you actually need and
choose only the best material for the final edit. Often you will shoot
several versions (takes) of a shot and choose the best one when edit-
ing.
Create a flow

Most videos serve a purpose such as telling a story or providing infor-

mation. Editing is a crucial step in making sure the video flows in a
way which achieves this goal.
Add effects, graphics, music, etc.

This is often the "wow" part of editing. You can improve most videos
(and have a lot of fun) by adding extra elements.
Alter the style, pace or mood of the video

A good editor will be able to create subtle mood prompts in a video.

Techniques such as mood music and visual effects can influence how
the audience will react.
Give the video a particular "angle"

Video can be tailored to support a particular viewpoint, impart a

message or serve an agenda.
Seeing that you are already familiar with
the goals of editing, it’s time for you to learn
more about the edit video features of Ado-
be Premiere.

The Timeline Panel

The timeline panel is where your video takes shape. By dragging items
from the project panel or source monitor and placing them in the de-
sired order, you create a sequence of clips and events which play in
the timeline from left to right.
Note: A project panel is the place that links to your project’s media
files.

With items in the timeline, you can:

1. Adjust edit points, making clips shorter or longer, or stretch them
over time.
2. Create multiple layers of video, e.g. titles, superimposed images.
3. Create multiple layers of audio, e.g. voiceovers, music.
4. Add transitions, filters, special effects.
5. You can also create "nested" sequences to help keep the timeline
manageable.
Note: When you have finished editing the timeline, you can play it
back in real time or export it in a variety of formats.
How to Cut & Trim a Video Clip in Premiere Pro (Videos)

You also have to learn vari-

ous ways on how to cut
and trim clips in Adobe
Premiere Pro CC.

Trimming clips in the Source Monitor

Trimming clips before placing them on the Time-
line is helpful. In addition to trimming clips directly
in the Project panel, you can use the Source
Monitor for more precise trimming. The source
monitor is the main place you’ll go when you
want to check your assets before including them
in a sequence. You can open a clip in the Source
Monitor, trim it there, and then add it to a se-
quence in the Timeline.
In this task, you practice trimming clips before adding them to the Timeline
in a sequence. To trim clips:
1. Start Adobe Premiere Pro and open an existing project that has at
least four video clips with audio.
2. Double-click a video clip in the Project
panel. The selected clip appears in the
Source Monitor (Figure 1).
Note: You also can drag the clip from the
Project panel to the Source Monitor. If the
source monitor is not open, select Window
> Workspace > Editing. Then select Window > Workspace > Reset Current
Workspace, and click Yes.
3. Drag the Source Monitor current-time in-
dicator (CTI) to where you want to put
the In point in the clip.
4. Click the Mark In button from the Source
Monitor trimming tools (Figure 2). A left-
bracket appears in the time ruler, with a
light-blue shading to the right (Figure 3).
In and Out points define a specific portion
of a clip or a sequence. Marking is the pro-
cess of setting the In and Out points of a
clip. The In point is the first frame you want
to include in a sequence. The Out point is
the last frame you include in a sequence.
NOTE: Adjusting a clip's In and Out points after it is edited into a
sequence is called trimming. Typically, trimming clips modify how
they play back in a sequence.
5. Play the clip, look for a logical Out point, and drag the Source Moni-
tor CTI there. Note: Rather than drag the CTI to a location in the clip,
you can type in a timecode and go there directly. Click the gold
timecode (on the left side of the Source Monitor), type a time
(hours, minutes, seconds, frame), and press Enter (Windows) or Re-
turn (Mac OS).
6. Click the Mark Out button from the Source Monitor trimming tools
(Figure 2). A right-bracket appears and the shading falls between
the In point and Out point (Figure 3).
7. Click the Go To In button and then the Go To Out button to navi-
gate back and forth between the In point and Out point.
8. Play the trimmed segment by placing the CTI at the In point, and
clicking the Play/Stop Toggle button (Figure 2).

Create Sequence Clips

A sequence is an edited assembly of audio and video clips.

Note: Switch to the Editing workspace by selecting Editing at the top of
the screen or by choosing Window > Workspaces > Editing. Your im-
ported footage now appears in the Project panel. If you don’t see the
Project panel, choose Window > Project. Your files may appear in a list;
to see thumbnails instead, click the thumbnail view icon at the bottom
of the panel.
Now you’re ready to create a sequence — the place where you as-
semble your video clips and audio along a timeline.
1. Select the first video clip you want to appear in your sequence and
drag it from the Project panel to the empty Timeline panel (choose
Window > Timeline if it’s not visible).
2. You can add other clips to this sequence by dragging each one
from the Project panel to the Timeline panel and placing them next
to another one that’s already there.
3. If you bring in a very long clip that fills up the entire Timeline panel,
press the minus (–) key on your keyboard multiple times to zoom out
and see more of your timeline. Pressing the plus (+) key multiple
times zooms in around the play head’s position.
Let me check if you really un-
derstand the lesson. Follow the
given procedures and answer
the given questions below.
Write your answers on your Ac-
tivity Notebook.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Video editing is the process of manipu-

lating and rearranging video shots to
create a new work. It takes some get-
ting used to, and learning the ins and
outs can be a little intimidating. It is not
all about cutting the bad parts of a vid-
eo. Editing is technical and it requires a
lot of patience and extra creativity. To
become good in editing, it requires con-
stant and continuous practice.
