“Outcast”

Logline
When a painter girl is not allowed to go for her ambition, she falls in a trap of depression.

Synopsis
Outcast is a story of a girl name Ezal who is a self-taught fine artist. She is very passionate about
her interest in arts and spends her most of the time making paintings. She has completed her
intermediate studies recently and is willing to apply for an art college while her family isn’t
supportive for her decision. They keep forcing to quit her hobby and wants her to go for medical
field instead of arts. She is constantly dealing with a high pressure of legacy and norms prevailing
in her family which is pushing away her dreams and goals. These circumstances are causing her
trauma and she is falling in a trap of insecurities and suicidal tendencies.

Detailed Synopsis
Scene 1: Ezal is opening a bottle of acrylic color with a paper cutter knife, she puts down the
cutter and stares at her canvas for a while and looks for something on desk. She takes out an
admission form of an arts school and starts clicking her ball point while lost in some thought.
Suddenly she hears her elder sister shouting her name and coming upstairs. It made her panicky
and she quickly hides her admission form. Mistakenly her hand hits a paint bottle and it fells
down creating a mess. Meanwhile her sister enters her room and gets angry when she finds out
that Ezal was painting. She yells at her and throws down her canvas saying that " Tum phr sy
painting py time waste krhe ho? tmhy pata hy na k Mom Dad ko pata chlay ga to wo kitna naraz
hongy? Yeh sab band kro or foran nechy ao khana lag gaya hy! " (Scene ends here on a shutting
door and one shot of Ezal's anxious expressions)

Scene 2: Both Ezal and her sister are sitting on a dining table. Ezal is not eating food but moving a
spoon in her plate randomly, lost in some thought again. Her sister gives a book and say's her
that " Mainy tmhara admission bhj dya hy or ab tum apny entry test ki tyari start kro" Ezal gets
frustrated, she gets up and says in a higher tone that " Main ap logon ko kitni baar bata chuki hun
k mjhy medical m nahii jana mjhy arts college main jana hy " Her sister gets up angrily and slaps
her. Ezal starts crying and she run towards her room. (Scenes ends here showing Ezal running
towards her room)
Scene 3: Ezal enters in her room and locks the door while crying. She sits on a couch and cries
there for some while. After that she looks at the paint bottle and canvas falling on a ground. She
wipes her tears away and picks up the canvas. She gets frightened when she finds out a scary
painting of a girl on that canvas. It makes her confused, disturbingly she starts covering that
painting with a white color. She is shaking and working quickly on canvas to get rid of the scary
painting as soon as possible. After a while she gets done with it and stares at the canvas
breathing heavily. While she is still horrified not knowing what is happening with her, someone
puts a hand on her shoulder from backside and when she turns around gets astonished and
freeze at her position. She sees the same scary girl from that painting standing Infront of her. The
scary girl smiles at her and gives her a paper cutter knife. Ezal takes that knife with her hands
shaking and her mouth open. Ezal puts the knife on her wrist and looks up at one last time. When
she looks up, she finds out that there is no one in her room. (Scene ends here with Ezal standing
still with a knife on her wrist and she’s looking here and there with confused look, she realizes
she’s holding a paint brush instead of knife.)

Director’s note
The story of this short fictional film is based on my personal experience of fighting with a
conservative people in our society who don’t praise “Art” as a professional field. These people
keep on degrading others who want to choose arts as an ambition. Constant humiliation of such
people brings out the insecurities and depression which leads to suicidal thoughts and
tendencies. I want to portray a hidden message that such bad comments and unappreciated
behavior on one’s passion can be life threatening. We need to respect every goal of others and
be supportive to them.
