Sta.

Rita 1000 MW Continuous Cycle Power Station

Sta. Rita, Batangas, Philippines

Owner: First Gas Power Corporation

Project: 1000 MW Sta. Rita Power Plant

Main Contractor: Siemens AG

Civil Works Contractor: First Philippine Balfour Beatty

Scope of works: Ground Improvement – Installation of Stone Columns

Contract Value: USD 1,600,000.00

Construction Period: May 1998 – January 1999

• With ever-increasing demand for electricity, new sources are always a welcome development
especially in the Philippines. First Gas Power Corporation is in the process of developing the 1000 MW
Sta. Rita gas-fired power plant as additional power source for the Luzon grid. The Malampaya On-
shore Gas Plant will provide supply of natural gas.
• Settlement is always a structural concern for the construction of roads, warehouses, etc. in poor
ground conditions. The use of conventional deep foundation like driven piles is comparatively
expensive and affects the adjacent property due to vibration. Other soil improvement methods such as
soil replacement and dynamic compaction may be technically unsuitable.
• For the soil improvement of the project, BAUER executed the installation of stone columns. A total of
59,500 l.m. of stone columns was installed during the period May 1998 to January 1999. The average
diameter of stone columns was 700mm.
• The soil improvement works were carried out within the contract period to the full satisfaction of the
client.
