NEOCLASSICISM (OR MERELY CLASSICISM) SIGNALLED A


RETURN TO ORDER AND RATIONALITY AFTER THE
FLAMBOYANT BAROQUE, AND THE DECORATIVE FRIVOLITY OF
THE ROCOCO. AS A STYLE COMPOSED OF MANY ELEMENTS,
NEOCLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE CAN BE IMITATED TO A
GREATER OR LESSER EXTENT.
THE PANTHEON, PARIS (1756-97). DESIGNED BY JACQUES-
GERMAIN SOUFFLOT. A MASTERPIECE OF NEOCLASSICISM IN
LATE-18TH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE (1750 ON).

IT WAS MARKED BY
LARGE-SCALE
STRUCTURES,
SUPPORTED AND/OR
DECORATED BY
COLUMNS OF DORIC,
IONIC OR
CORINTHIAN PILLARS.
SOMETIMES COLUMNS WERE MULTIPLIED AND
STACKED, TO CREATE AN IMPRESSION OF HEIGHT,
WHILE FACADES WERE DECORATED WITH A
COMBINATION OF COLONNADES, ROTUNDAS AND
PORTICOES. THE PANTHÉON IS A NEOCLASSICAL CHURCH IN THE LATIN QUARTER OF PARIS.
IT WAS ORIGINALLY AN ABBEY DEDICATED TO ST. GENEVIEVE (THE PATRON SAINT OF PARIS), BUT
NOW FUNCTIONS PRIMARILY AS A BURIAL.

THE BEAUX ARTS ARCHITECTURE STYLE IS CLASSIC


AND EASILY RECOGNIZABLE. ORIGINATING IN 19TH
CENTURY FRANCE, IT MIRRORS MUCH OF THE
OPULENCE AND DECORATION FROM THAT ERA AND
REGION.

BEAUX ARTS ARCHITECTURE IS CHARACTERISTICALLY


SYMMETRICAL, GRANDIOSE, ELABORATE, AND
REMINISCENT OF ITS FORMAL ROOTS. ITS ELEMENTS
ARE NEARLY ALWAYS OPULENT. SOME OF THE
ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OFTEN SEEN IN

THE STYLE INCLUDE BALCONIES, COLUMNS,


PEDIMENTS (TRIANGULAR GABLES), AND
BALUSTRADES (VERTICAL POSTS).
THE EXTERIORS ARE TYPICALLY STONE,
SYMMETRICAL, AND USE EITHER FLAT OR
LOW-PITCHED ROOFS.

THE ELK’S MEMORIAL IS ONE OF THE CHICAGO'S


MOST GRAND COMMEMORATIVE BUILDINGS AND IS
AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF A MONUMENTAL
BUILDING IN THE CLASSICAL BEAUX-ARTS STYLE.
THE BUILDING DISPLAYS A POWERFUL PRESENCE ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF LINCOLN PARK,
WHERE IT IS A FAMILIAR SITE TO THOUSANDS OF CHICAGOANS AS WELL AS VISITORS TO THE
CITY.

BRUTALIST BUILDING IS THE CONTROVERSIAL BUILDING BECAUSE OF ITS “TOILET FORM” KNOWN
AS THE CCP OR THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES. IT IS A BUILDING ESTABLISHED IN
1969 AND WAS DESIGNED BY LEANDRO
LOCSIN. THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING IS A
HUGE BLOCK CARRIED BY THE CURVED
BUTTRESSES AND A SMALLER BLOCK AT
THE TOP. THE BUILDING FEELS VERY HEAVY
BECAUSE OF THE HUGE CANOPY AROUND
THE BUILDING. THE RAMP IS IN AN
OCTAGONAL SHAPE WHICH MAKES THE
STRUCTURE LOOK LIKE A TOILET FROM
ABOVE.  

IT PROVIDES PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBITION VENUES FOR


VARIOUS LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS AND
PROGRAMS. IT HOSTS PERFORMANCES, FESTIVALS,
EXHIBITIONS, CULTURAL RESEARCH, OUTREACH,
PRESERVATION, AND PUBLICATION OF MATERIALS ON
PHILIPPINE ART AND CULTURE.
THE KEY CHARACTERISTIC OF BRUTALISM, HOWEVER, IS
THE USE OF STRONG, BOLD SHAPES, COMPOSED OF
REINFORCED STRUCTURES ON A LARGE, OFTEN IMPOSING
SCALE. IT INCLUDES LARGE BLANK SURFACES AS WELL AS
STRONG LINES.
