Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 5th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Educator Standard 7B "Educators will use technology to design and
implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely
feedback to students, and inform instruction."

Overarching Question: How is adding and subtracting fractions different?

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s)

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity:
Prior to working with the software tool, the students will independently work on adding and subtracting
fractions. I will be giving them different equations in the board, and they will work on them on their own.
They will show their answers at the end with their work, and we will work on the ones that students are
missing the most.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the SRT activity the students will work
through the equations on the Kahoot and answer on their devices. They will be able to use their phones,
computers, tablets, or any other device compatible with Kahoot. I will be making sure that they are showing
their work and working independently.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10). If you
cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a question or two you
would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your Bloom’s terms to design the
question(s): 1. Do you think the placement of the numerator and denominator affect the answer of the
equation? If yes, why? If no, why?
2. If you were to keep the same numbers but change the operation, how would you be able to
get the same answer? If you would not be able to, why would that be? If you could, why would that be?

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all the questions and display
correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? I will, during the Kahoot I will allow for it to show the correct answer after everyone has
answered. I will do this to get the students thinking of their work and how they could change it to come to the
correct solution.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used? The students will get a
participation grade for completing this activity. I will gather data from the Kahoot to see which questions
caused the most trouble for all students. I will use it to differentiate instruction when continuing this lesson
and add problems like these. This information will be shared vaguely with the students meaning that the
students will not know who got these questions right or wrong.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I would like to see if Kahoot would be successful in
providing me with the immediate feedback I need to help my students. I would also like to see if it engages
my students for the entire activity.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this could impact student learning by helping them learn to look further into
questions and allow for more in-depth answers. To extend this lesson, I could set up an activity in which the
students produce their own equations. They could then share them with their peers and ask them to answer
them.
