Q1: Read the following passages, then identify and write the stated main idea/topic
sentence and two relevant supporting details for each respective passage. The main idea
and the supporting details should be written in the space(s) provided.

1. Polygraph tests have been viewed as an invasion of privacy and criticized on ethical, legal,
and scientific grounds. Polygraph tests have been an issue of contention between the behaviorists
from different schools of thought for years. The physiological changes thought to reveal
deception could result from anxiety about being interrogated, anger at being asked to take the
test, or fear from pondering the consequences of “failing” the test. You might react in any of
these ways if you were “hooked up” to a polygraph. (Marks 2)

2. Many foods and beverages are produced with the help of microbial fermentation. Lactic acid
bacteria are used in the production of acidophilus milk, yogurt, pickles, olives, and sauerkraut.
Several types of bacteria are used to produce cheese. Bacteria are involved in making fermented
meats such as salami and in the production of vinegar, soy sauce, chocolate, and certain B
vitamins (B12 and riboflavin). Bacteria are also used in the production of citric acid, a compound
added to candy and to most soft drinks. (Marks 2)

1. In earlier days those who had overseas business which they believed should be discussed
personally, took ship and set out across the briny deep. Once aboard they transacted their affairs,
engaging in commercial and social matters or conducting government business. Today ships and
passengers continue to sail the seven seas, and airplanes soar overhead. But above them all,
words speed through the sky – telephone conversations quickly bring together in the most
personal fashion people who are separated by thousands of miles. (Marks 2)

Implied Main Idea:

Many conversation which once required overseas travel can be conducted by


telephone.

Supporting Details:

2. When tigers hunt, they hunt alone. In contrast, lions hunt in groups; they work together to
drive their prey into an ambush. Cheetahs are known for their speed when they chase prey.
Leopards are able to climb trees when they are prowling for prey. Surprisingly, jaguars often
hunt in water. (Marks 2)

Family of felidae such as tiger, leopard, cheetahs, jaguar, lion all members of the
family have different ways of hunting.

1) When tigers hunt, they hunt alone. In contrast, lions hunt in groups; they

1) The internet has some great positive effects, as it provides effective


communication, improves business interactions and facilitates students to
seek information for studies.

2) Fast food is popular because the food is inexpensive, convenient, and tastes
good.
