Running Head: IMPACT OF SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT 1

Impact of Skin to Skin Contact

IMPACT ON SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT 2

PICOT

Among healthy newborn infants in low- and middle-income countries , does early skin-to-skin

contact of the baby with the mother in the first hour of life compared with drying and wrapping

have an impact on neonatal mortality and hypothermia?

The reason I chose this picot question was because as of right now my interest working as

a nurse would be to work as an OB nurse. I have had an experience when I had my second

youngest daughter who was a premature baby that was born at 2 pounds 14 ounces at 30 weeks. I

was really afraid she was not going to make it and after she came out and seen how small she

was I thought that she was going to have a long hospital stay and as the doctors told me that she

may have delays and some difficulties in life. Once she came out the nurses placed her on my

bare chest before even drying her because I requested, at first the nurse was a little hesitant due

to the circumstances but she did as I asked and they were afraid of my daughter oxygen dropping

but when she was placed on my chest naked they monitored her and realize her oxygen was good

and even her thermoregulation. I got to have her naked on my chest while they stitched me back

up after the C-section. She later had to be transported to the NICU to keep a close eye on her but

the nurses informed me that she was breathing on her own and just needed assistance in feeding.

After my anesthesia wore out, I spent every day in the NICU with her and let her lay on my chest

naked with nothing but diaper on. At the time I was not sure if that made a difference because the

doctors were amazed of how fast she was adapting being born early and she was released at 4

pounds 12 ounces a week after she was born. I wasn’t sure if the skin to skin made a different but

after researching and reading on different articles I do believe that it was part of it. Skin to skin

contact is a great way of mother and baby bounding not only for full term babies but also very

beneficial for preemies.
