Perceptions of the Importance of Technology in Schools, 4(3), 187-196

INTRODUCTION
Research Questions (if research questions are not specifically mentioned, what
is the theoretical background or overarching theme):

- What are principals’ perceptions of the importance of technology?

- Do principals’ perceptions of technology differ by years of
experience and gender?

Purpose of the research:

The purpose of this study is to indicate that both gender and years of experience
influence how principals perceive the functions of technology in their schools.

METHODOLOGY
What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants:

310 principals from a large metropolitan area in the southwest region of the United
States

Procedures:

An interview questionnaire

Data Collection Methods/Data Source:

Graduate students in the Educational Leadership program at a major, urban

doctoral-granting university located in the south central region of the United States
administered the questions

Data Analysis:

The participants’ responses were read several times to become familiar with
the data. The data was then coded into meaningful categories.

RESULTS

Findings or Results (or main points of the article):

- About one-third (35%) of the principals indicated that technology was used as
a primary communication tool

- Over one-quarter (28%) of principals responded that technology was integrated in

teachers’ classroom instruction

- 14% was using technology for data sharing and management - 15% was
using technology as a resource to find information
DISCUSSIONS

Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):

Principal preparation programs may want to consider addressing technology

leadership so that school leaders are better prepared to effectively implement
technology in their schools (Hines, Edmonson, & Moore, 2008) . We have
Development of Teaching Proficiency programs two times a year where we focus on
these issues mostly, especially the last two programs. And there is significant
progress of the three principals of our campus.

REFLECTIONS
Student’s Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your
school/work):

Using technology at school was always one of the crucial issues of education.
Especially now, during the pandemic it gets very important. Because teaching is
conducted online and it means totally technology use. Even if the staff is qualified
enough to use technology to teach, it is the principal who guides and controls the
teaching process who should understand at least the basics of this. As the conclusion
states, the government education departments must handle this thoroughly and
organize the training about importance and usage of the technology more than they
used to do it before.
