Peer Observation Task – Choose Focus

Select one of the following areas to focus on:

● The students
● The teacher
● The lesson

Make notes (on a separate sheet and attach) so that during feedback you can
comment on your colleagues’ performance.

The students

● Which students have the highest and lowest levels of English?


● What pronunciation problems do the students have? Consider both individual
words or sounds and language at sentence level too.
● Watch the students understanding of instructions. Did any not understand?
How do you know? Why did this happen?
● Which students are more extrovert?
● Which students are more introvert?
● Are outspoken students dominating the lesson?
● Are shy students contributing?
● If not, why not?

The teacher

● Is the teacher eliciting well?


● What information are students being asked to give?
● Is the teacher concept checking effectively? List some examples of concept
checking.
● Where did the teacher miss an opportunity to concept check?
● What is the teacher’s boardwork like?
● Are the students being addressed by name?
● How well do they understand instructions?

The lesson

● Can you clearly see the stages of the lesson?


● Make a note of the stages.
● Do you think the students are learning something? If not, why not?
● What is the balance of interaction like?
● Were the students aware of the lesson aims at the end?
