Tutorial-I DESIGN OF RCC

Year IV GROUP EF
Semester I Tutorial 1

Tutorial Description
The tutorial aims to cover problems under Chapter 2: Working Stress Method of Design

1. Find the depth of neutral axis and percentage of steel for a balanced singly reinforced
beam The permissible stress in concrete and steel should not exceed 5 MPa and 140 MPa
respectively. [Note. 1 MPa = 106 N/m2 = 1 N/mm2]
2. Find the moment of resistance of a RCC beam 300 mm wide and 450 mm effective depth
is reinforced with 4 bars of 16 mm diameter. The permissible stress in concrete and steel
should not exceed 7 MPa and 140 MPa respectively.
3. A rectangular RC beam of size 230 x 350 mm overall is reinforced with 3-16 mm dia
bars at tension zone in bottom. Determine the moment of resistance if the permissible
stresses in concrete and steel do not exceed 7 MPa and 140 MPa respectively. Take the
nominal cover to rebar as 25 mm.
4. Using working stress method, design a rectangular section 300 mm wide and 450 mm
deep carrying 30 kN/m load in the effective span 3.6 m. Use mild steel and M20 grade
concrete.
5. The moment of resistance of a singly-reinforced rectangular reinforced concrete beam
section having width b mm and overall depth D mm is 0.85bd2. The permissible stresses
in the extreme fiber of the concrete and in the steel are not to exceed 7 N/mm2 and 140
N/mm2 respectively. Determine the ratio between the depth of neural axis from the top
compression fiber and effective depth of the beam.
6. Determine the moment of resistance of a singly reinforced 200 mm wide and 350 mm
deep (effective) beam. The reinforcement consists of 4 bars of 16 mm diameter. Use M15
concrete and Fe415 steel. If the span of the beam is 5 m, find the maximum distributed
load which the beam can carry, inclusive of its own weight.
7. An RC beam 250 mm wide and 400 mm deep with area of steel 550 mm2 has permissible
stresses in concrete and steel 5 N/mm2 and 140 N/mm2 respectively. Find the depth of
N.A and moment of resistance of the section. Determine the stress induced in the top
compression fibre and tension steel.
8. A rectangular beam of size 300 mm x 500 mm effective depth is reinforced with 4-16
mm diameter tension bars. Determine the stress induced in the top compression fibre of
the concrete and tension steel when it is subjected to a moment of 50 kNm. Take M20
concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
9. Design a rectangular beam with simply supported clear span of 5 m. The beam is
subjected to dead load of 12 kN/m and a live load of 20 kN/m. The permissible stresses in
the extreme fiber of the concrete and in the steel are not to exceed 7 N/mm2 and 140
N/mm2 respectively.
10. A rectangular beam of 300 mm width is subjected to a uniformly distributed of 20 kN/m
inclusive of both dead and live load over an effective span of 8 m. Determine the depth of
the beam and the area of tensile reinforcement required. The permissible stress in
concrete and steel should not exceed 5 MPa and 140 MPa respectively.
