Climate change in Ontario

By : Harry, Marcel and Taha

What is climate change? - Harry (Slides 1-8)
“Climate* change” describes a change within the average conditions - such as
temperature, wind, humidity and rainfall - in a region after an extended period of time.

Climate is what determines what our local animals are what type of crops and vegetation
the region offers. (example - can only be grown in warm climates! (above 25°C only)

*Climate is the long-term average of weather, typically averaged over a period of 30 years. Weather is day-to-day.
What causes
climate change?
Natural causes of climate change :

★ Obliquity - axial tilt

★ Eccentricity - elliptical and
circular paths
★ Solar variations
★ Ice Age
But man made aka - “anthropogenic” factors for climate change are far
more dangerous! :

❖ Burning fossil fuels

❖ Deforestation
❖ Plastic pollution
❖ Using artificial fertilizers in agriculture
❖ Use of air conditioners, refrigerators.

A thing to note here is that Climate change and Global warming are two different things! People mix it up always!
Not to scale
What does ozone do for you?
➢ Ozone absorbs harmful
radiation
➢ Bounces harmful radiation.

● Ozone layer - invisible shield

Protects us from harmful
ultraviolet (UV).
● Long-term exposure to high
levels of UV threatens human
health and damages most
animals, plants and microbes.
But how is the heat re-emitted to earth?
This works the same with all other
greenhouse gasses!

All greenhouse gasses however have

different capacities to absorb and emit
back to earth!
Public and government intervention- Marcel
What are countries doing
collaboratively to help combat climate
change?

● -As countries prepare to conclude an

international climate agreement in Paris at
the end of this year, 150 countries,
including every major economy in the
world, have submitted national climate
plans for the 2015 climate agreement. -
● These plans are from countries
representing nearly 90% of global
emissions.
What is Canada and the federal government doing to help
with climate change
The 2016 Pan-Canadian Framework
on Clean Growth and Climate
Change is Canada’s plan to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, grow the
economy, and build resilience to a
changing climate.
It is an important first step for
Canada to achieve its Paris
Agreement target, and has put
Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions
on a strong downward trend.

1. Urge government to take bold, ambitious climate

action now.

2. Use energy wisely — and save money too!

3. Get charged up with renewables.

4. Eat for a climate-stable planet.

5. Green your commute.

6. Consume less, waste less, enjoy life more

How climate change affects people, health, and the
economy.-Taha

There will be More allergies and other health risks. Taxes will rise,
hurricanes will become more stronger and more intense and sea
level will rise 1-8 feet by 2100.
More droughts and heatwaves and that could lead to mental health
issues, Outdoor work could become unbearable, and Food will be a
lot more expensive and some may suffer.
Around the World -- What People think -Taha
71% of people in India think that human activity is
the main reason of climate change and across
Europe, 47% of people view climate change as the
biggest challenge in their lives.
Climate change is likely to destroy the world’s
economy, flood cities, cause mass migrations and
even cause regional wars and Climate change will
cause a new world war, although Europe and the
U.S. think that is less likely.
90% of the world believe that climate change is
real.
Countries that are most likely to survive climate
change-Taha

Canada, Australia, and the U.S. are more likely to survive climate change than the rest
of the countries.
Facts about Climate Change-Taha
2019 was the second warmest year on record and
also in 2018, there were 14 extreme-weather events
that resulted in more than $1 billion in damages
More than 1 million species are at risk of
extinction by climate change and Scientists
predict that we will come to an end by 2050
unless we take action on greenhouse gases right
now.
