Construction Project Management

(ECM 566)

Group Project

1.0 Introduction

This open-ended project is specially designed to fulfil the continuous assessment for Open
Distance Learning (ODL) as a partial replacement (40%) for the Faculty Exam during covid19
pandemic.

At the end of this project, the students should be able to comprehend the nature of a typical
construction project faced with the unfamiliarity or infrequently encountered issues. The
students are required to develop a construction project goal statement and a project priority
matrix for ANY selected real construction project based upon a clear understanding of the
project stakeholder’s needs and requirements. At the end, the students shall evaluate
problems faced by a construction project and propose solutions to the problems based upon
the Project Priority Matrix.

This project is to be carried out in groups (4-5 person) related to the specific project description
and according to the assigned tasks. Some of the tasks need to be carried out as a group and
some tasks shall be carried out individually. However, both group and individual works must
be compiled together and submitted as a Group submission by the Group Leader.

2.0 Programme Outcomes (PO), Course Outcomes (LO), Knowledge Profiles (WK) and
Complex Engineering Problems (WP)

There are two (2) Course Outcomes (CO) and two (2) programme outcomes (PO) to be
addressed by this project as mapped in the following table.

6.0 Tasks to be carried out
As a construction project manager (PM), you are expected to carry out the main project
management functions which are project definition, project planning and project control. A
project’s success greatly depends on how well the PM is able to define the project goal and
objectives based upon a clear understanding of the project stakeholder’s needs and
requirements, establish their project priorities, managing changes and ensuring stakeholder’s
needs and priorities are constantly monitored and eventually fulfilled.

1. AS A GROUP, select any real project in Malaysia and provide a review of a completed
construction project with poor performance (students may select/choose either cost
overrun, time overrun or poor quality performance or combination) supported by relevant
and validated reports, press statement, online news, and related information (CO2-
PO11)(5%)(C4)
2. AS A GROUP, identify the stakeholders involved and discuss on their differing needs and
contradicting requirements that might have affected the performance of the selected
project. (CO2-PO11) (5%) (C3)
3. AS A GROUP, propose one (1) probable Project Goal together with a probable Project
Priority Matrix for the selected project with justification from relevant and validated reports,
press statement, online news, related information etc. (CO2-PO11) (10%) (C4)
4. EACH STUDENT is required to evaluate three (3) incidents / situations /decisions
/proposals that affects project performance, based upon the proposed Project Priority
Matrix. WP1: depth of knowledge; WP3: Depth of analysis) (CO1-PO2) (10%) (WP/C5)
5. EACH STUDENT is required to propose different viable solution for the problems caused
by the incident/ situation /decision (identified in Task 4) occurring in the project with
reference to the proposed Project Priority Matrix that is aligned to and not conflicting with
the project priority matrix (established in Task 3) (CO1-PO2) (10%)(WP/C6)

7.0 Assessment and Submission of Report

A comprehensive report will be used to assess both individual (20%) and group (20%) works.
Due date: 25 June 2021 by 11.59 pm through Google Classroom/Email/MT/U-future etc.
to their respective lecturers.

8.0 Format of Report
a. General format:
- Font: Arial (size 11 single spacing)
- Individual Reports for Tasks 4 and 5 should be compiled together in the Group Report
submission, with Names and Student ID written for each of the team member’s individual
report. There will be penalties (marks deduction) for plagiarism between individual team
members report.
b. Specific format
The report must consist of the following sections:
Front Page – Project Title, Names, UiTM no. Group No.
Table of Contents
List of Tables
List of Figures
Executive Summary or Abstract (max 1 page)
Introduction/Background of Project Assignment (max 1 page)
Content of report shall follow the rubrics, as follows:
➢ Review of the Construction Project (Max. of 3 pages)
