WHY FAST FOOD CHAINS FLOPPED IN VIET NAM?

I. Introduction
- Have you ever tried a hamburger or fried chicken in Mc Donald or Burger King? How do
you feel? Is it more delicious and cheaper than Vietnamese traditional street food like
Banh mi, com tam, banh trang tron.
- And Do you know that Burger King has over 16000 locations in over 100 countries.
While the figure for McDonald’s is 36000. According to business statistics, the fast food
industry is estimated to be worth more than half a trillion dollars, and continuously
increasing. However, this is a kind of another story in our country. These brands have
struggled to enter into Vietnamese market.
- So, today, I’m gonna tell you exactly two reasons why fast food chains fail in Viet Nam. I
think this is quite an interesting and familiar topic to talk about, especially who are food
holic.
II. Body

1 st reason:

The first reason is due to the fact that There is a whole culture of street food in Vietnam, which
is a formidable rival for international fast-food chains which want to compete with local
competition. If you are riding your bicycle and feeling hungry, you just need to park your bike
off the street and you would catch the sight of some food stalls around . The whole transaction is
really quick: You come in, order food, eat, and because stall is right on the pavement, you can
grab your bike immediately and restart your ride. This undermines fast-food’s advertised time-
saving advantage because street food in Vietnam takes even less time.

Some people will think that price is the another cause.

But price isn’t a big part of the answer to Burger King and McDonald’s failure in Vietnam. What
is more important is the different experience that fast-food restaurants and street food stalls offer.
Vietnamese people love to talk and share. And eating is to meet both their biological demand and
their need to socialize. The setting of most fast food served there barely allow for any
interactions between customers and sellers as well as among the customers themselves. Whereas
with street food, you get to blend into the surroundings, you become part of the place. You get to
ask the seller to adjust the food to suit your taste.
As a result, although McDonald’s and Burger King dominate all around the world, there are only
17 McDonald’s stores and 13 Burger King’s in Vietnam up to now.
To wrap up, international fast-food chains come up against tough competition in Vietnam, local
cuisine offers incredible variety, wonderful flavor and incomparable value just within a very
short time, which leads to the failure of 2 giant fast food franchise MC Donald and Burger King
in Vietnam. This also brings to the end of my presentation. Thank you for your listening.
In addition, Vietnamese food is shareable which is suitable for the local dining habit while
hamburgers of McDonald’s and Burger King are not easy to be shared.
