    The poem is about the wind calling on the leaves to come out and play in the meadows. It tells the leaves that summer is over and it is time to put on their red and gold dresses. When the leaves hear the wind's call, they come fluttering down from the trees. They then dance and fly across the field, singing little songs. In the end, the leaves grow tired from dancing and are fast asleep under a blanket of snow that has covered them.

    O’er the brown field then they danced and flew
