Chapter V

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

This chapter presents a comprehensive exhibition of the summary of findings,

conclusions based on the obtained and analyzed results, and recommendations derived

from the conclusion.

Summary of Findings

Carabao mangoes, a kidney-shaped national fruit of the Philippines that is

abundant and most popular during the summer season, are commonly harvested from

the months of March to June. According to various researchers, fruit flies infest

mangoes because they are one of the most damaging pests on fruits and vegetables

worldwide. Thus, this study aimed to determine the efficacy of the two homemade

insecticides such as acetic acid and coffee because of their feasibility and less expense

but have the same effect as chemical insecticides that most people use. Additionally,

coffee is well-known as a beverage, but it has also been identified as a potential

insecticide, as well as acetic acid. The study was conducted inside the properties of the

tenth group of 11th graders of City of San Jose Del Monte National Science High

School during the summer of the year 2021. The researchers chose bioassay and

observation to gather data in order to assess this. This study employed statistical

treatment in order to analyze and validate the gathered data and, essentially, accept or

reject the proposed hypothesis.

The findings of this study were unable to demonstrate the effectiveness of the

two homemade insecticides which are acetic acid and coffee, hence the two solutions

were ineffective for use as a homemade insecticide.

Conclusions

In light of the researchers’ performance of the experimentation with the

guidance of the Drosophila melanogaster bioassay (Grant, 2001), the data gathered

from the trial conducted was presented, computed, and interpreted. Therefore, the result

of this study concludes that neither acetic acid nor coffee solution with concentrations

of 10% and 20% has exhibited strong effectivity as insecticides, particularly against

Drosophila melanogaster (common fruit flies) in Mangifera indica L. (Carabao

mango), and the minimum concentration that shows the highest vulnerability to the

infestation of fruit fly is the 10% acetic acid solution.

In conclusion, acetic acid and coffee solutions were ineffective as a homemade

insecticide, failing to control fruit fly infestations on mangoes. Furthermore, this study

thus accepts the null hypothesis and rejects the alternative hypothesis that states the

effectiveness of the two different solutions.

Recommendations

The present study focused on finding the effectiveness of acetic acid and coffee

effectiveness as a homemade insecticide against fruit flies on mangoes. For further

investigation, the researchers propose that future researchers who would conduct the

same study should consider increasing the concentration of acetic acid and coffee

solutions to compare and explore differences in the outcomes obtained from the results

gathered. It is also recommended to use other tropical fruits that are found here in the

Philippines to test its universal use against fruit flies for various fruits. Also, the

researchers encourage the use and consideration of other statistical treatments (SPSS)

in analyzing the data to aid future studies exhibit absolute accuracy.
