7. Read the article. Then choose the correct answer.

World Heritage Sites

It would be difficult to visit all 890 World Heritage sites on the United
Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO)
list in one lifetime, but some tourists try. And it’s not hard to understand
why. The World Heritage sites are places with cultural or natural features
of “outstanding universal value,” according to UNESCO. They’re places
the world agrees are worth saving for future generations. It’s quite a
distinction!

Along with that distinction comes recognition, and since travel and tourism
now comprise one of the world’s largest industries, designation as a World
Heritage site can be a welcome way to attract visitors to places badly in
need of income. In Cambodia, the ruins of the Angkor Wat temple attract
two million tourists every year. But some people worry that the nearby city
of Siem Reap has become overrun with hotels and restaurants to
accommodate the tourists, and that this uncontrolled development will
detract from the experience of visiting Angkor Wat.

Other World Heritage sites have been placed on the List of World Heritage
in Danger by UNESCO. These places have been threatened or damaged by
war, natural disasters such as earthquakes, or by tourism and development
that resembles the situation in Angkor Wat. In some ways, this list
represents the original intention of the World Heritage sites. In 1991, for
example, the Old City of Dubrovnik in Croatia was heavily damaged by
warfare. The site was placed on the danger list, and UNESCO provided
restoration experts and financial support to help the Croatian government
replace roofs and repair buildings.

Damage from tourism is something that UNESCO has gotten involved in

more recently. The organization is currently studying the impact of
frequent helicopter flights over the Iguaçu Falls in Brazil, and in Ecuador,
the impact of tourism on the delicate ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands.
The organization has already been successful in keeping development away
from some World Heritage sites, preventing the construction of a salt
factory inside the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaíno in Mexico and a
highway project near the Giza Pyramids in Egypt.
WORLD ENGLISH 2 PREINTERMEDIATE TEST 10

Despite criticisms over UNESCO’s limited ability to enforce its

recommendations on the maintenance of World Heritage sites, as well as
the inclusion on the list of sites with questionable cultural or natural value,
the organization has at least recognized the importance of making future
tourism to the sites sustainable.

__A__1. The reading is mainly about ____.

a. the importance of World Heritage sites

____.
a. crowded
b. wealthy
c. attractive

__C__3. The best heading for the third paragraph would be ____.
a. The Origins of UNESCO World Heritage Sites
b. UNESCO’s Tool for Preserving World Heritage Sites
c. Saving World Heritage Sites After Natural Disasters

__A__4. In which of these places has UNESCO been able to prevent development?
a. the Giza pyramids
b. the Galapagos Islands
c. the Iguaçu Falls

_B___5. Why do some people criticize UNESCO?

a. They don’t want travel and tourism to their region.
b. They disagree with the importance of some of the sites on the list.
c. They doubt that the organization represents their region’s best interest.

WRITING
9. Describe different kinds of tourism in the place you live. Does the
tourism have positive or negative effects? Give details and reasons for
your answers.

Colombia is a very diverse country and therefore it has different types of tourism. It contains
incredible places thanks to landscapes that provoke going to know

One of the most important tourism is clearly the beach. The most visited places are San Andrés
and Cartagena for its beautiful seas and marine diversity. It is a very attractive trip for tourists.
Other important tourism is the gastronomy because people can know different staples food of
the different cities ,through her food they will know its culture and they will be able to know
what the economy of each place is based on, I believe that the most representative food is
sancocho and arepa. Religious tourism is also highly recognized here because it is a heritage
site and attracts millions of parishioners, such as Villa de Leyva, Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, Las
Lajas Sanctuary, Buga and Monserrate. Historical tourism is cultural heritage and is for those
passionate about ancient places and in knowing the history of these places, whether in
museums, passages, the house of culture, we have in Cartagena the castle of San Felipe and
the fifth of San Pedro Alejandrino recognized because there Simon Bolivar died. It is worth
noting the adventurous tourism in our country, for those people who like adventures in places
like mountains, for example, the Tusa hill in Venice and the snowy Ruiz in Manizales and we
have archaeological tourism that includes all the monuments and sites, such as the lost city in
the sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the inland archaeological park in Cauca.

Tourism can provide jobs and improve the wealth of an area. Many developing countries are
interested in developing tourism to enrich themselves and improve the quality of life of their
inhabitants, but when this can have positive and negative impacts.

Positives may be that local traditions and customs are kept alive because tourists enjoy
traditional shows. Tourist money can be used to protect the natural landscape. Greater
demand for food and handicrafts, therefore this generates a lot of work and more money for
the country.

But obviously it brings negative aspects such as environmental damage (tourists do not take
care of ecosystems and litter the trails) They destroy habitats to build more hotels. In many
places they are only visited at a certain time of the year so the money will not come. The
cultures and traditions of each site can be changed by foreigners and there may be negative
effects of cultural interactions. In terms of economic disadvantages, local communities must be
able to finance tourism demands, leading to increased taxes.

Some countries rely heavily on tourism and this can be a problem if tourists stop coming.
Sometimes, the number of tourists falls due to natural disasters such as floods or war or riots,
but at this time tourism is stopped due to CORONAVIRUS,
