Accomodation:
Different types of accommodation available:

For initial few days -

Pousada - similar concept to paying guests. Single or double rooms with free wifi and breakfast.
Features of hotel but homely style. Good for the initial days before finding a place to stay. Suitable if you
are coming with family too.

“I would strongly suggest to book a Pousada for your initial days while coming here if you haven’t found a
place to rent. You can finalize and rent a place after coming here.”
Hostel - Normally hostels are kind of dormitory with 4, 6 or 8 beds in a room. Shared bathroom. Also
includes free wifi and breakfast.

Hotel - Little costly but comfortable if you are coming with family. Also zero issues with language.

To rent during your stay at Brazil-

Kitnet - These are kind of studio apartment and comes in different types. Mostly these are one room
(bedroom + kitchen) and bathroom. Mostly semi-furnished which normally includes bed (no mattress),
Gas stove burner, Refrigerator, Washing machine (mostly shared), Table, Chair etc. There are some
good kitnet which cost little more but provide separate bedroom, and sometimes partial separation for the
kitchen too.

Kitnet near the university of caminas (UNICAMP) can cost from 900 to 1500 BRL (brazilian real). The
contracts are mostly 1yr or 2 year with 3 months of caution money for security.

Apartment - Apartments are in a multistoried buildings and available in 1BHK or 2BHK formats.
Apartments are not furnished. But it is easy to find used things here to furnish the apartment easily and
cheaply. THese costs (near the university of caminas (UNICAMP)) from 1400 - 2700 depending on the
location, 1 or 2 BHK, gated community or not etc…
Individual house - This may be row house, separate house or “casa do fundo” (small 1BHK behind the
actual house of the owner, makes it more secure and affordable). Most of the times individual houses are
2 BHK or more. Hence can cost towards 3k or more. But these are really good if 3-4 people wants to rent
a place together. The houses are big and comfortable here. Again these are also not furnished.

Republica - These can be considered as student frat houses. Most of the time these are individual houses
accommodating around 10-12 students while most of the rooms are shared by 2 or 3 students. These are
maintained by the students living in the house. Hence they normally may not have a proper contract.
THese are cheaper. But there are some good Republica which are specifically for Graduate students
(masters/phd). These are not that crowded and offer a good calm environment to study too. These can be
costly, but mostly little cheaper than KITNET.

Pensionato - This can be thought as a luxury REPUBLICA but managed and maintained by the owner.
Most of the times the owner also stay there. Rooms are individual or shared. The common areas consists
of kitchen, drawing room, laundry area etc. Normally kept cleaned by professionals. Costs similar to
kitnet. Don't encourage to make loud noises, host parties etc.

To find a house is always a challenging task. I would suggest to glance through the below links:

kitnets usually have a refrigerator, a stove, bed and closet (sometimes they have a microwave and sofa)
and you need to buy other stuff by yourself. You can check the following site:

https://ofertas.mercadolivre.com.br/natal

(Some students sell their staffs in "Trocas e Vendas Unicamp" in facebook that u can buy in less price if
you want. )

If you are planning to stay near to the university of Campinas (UNICAMP) and center of barao geraldo
with close proximity to supermarkets etc, the below map can give you a fair idea. Here you can go around
by walking or with a bicycle easily.
There are other good options is the region near “moradia” of unicamp which is the student hostel of
unicamp. As unicamp provides bus service from moradia to university throughout the day, it is possible to
stay near to the moradia area and use the free university bus service.
These links provide you an idea about different kinds of housing options available around Unicamp. I
would suggest to look for a place within 2km radius from the university.
Can be a good option for temporary accomodation: International Home [
ww.facebook.com/unicamphome ]

You won't have any language problems there as they speak English. Message them directly to get your
answers.

The university has a dormitory but i heard that it is not possible to go there as you arrived and it may take
time to get a room there. You can also check the price to rent a kitnet. apartment, republica and etc. at:

How to reach Barao Geraldo, Campinas:

This link summarizes how to reach campinas.
http://www.internationaloffice.unicamp.br/english/international-students/pre-arrival-information/getting-to-
unicamp/

Unicamp has two campuses - One at Barao Geraldo, Campinas and the other one at Limeira. Barao
Geraldo is the outskirt area of Campinas city and referred as a District.

You should plan to come to Guarulhos Airport, São paulo. From there you need to buy a ticket to
campinas by bus service called LIRABUS. The ticket counter is available outside of Terminal 2. The bus
ticket normally costs you around 35 BRL. Though they accept cards, keep some cash with you in case
the card machine doesn’t work. (happened with me).
The LIRABUS will have 1 or 2 stops before reaching “Terminal Rodoviário de Campinas“ (main bus
terminal of campinas city). This will be the last stop for the LIRABUS.
From here you can take a taxi or shared taxi to the place at barao geraldo you have decided to. By taxi it
will be around 50 BRL. The cheaper option will be to opt for taxi hail service like uber or others specific to
brazil (will cost around 30 BRL).

About food prices you can check for example the following site:

To answer some of the common questions:

1. Well, it is very difficult to buy kitnets or other accommodation sitting at your home country,

We may be, but lot of help needed in this question

=> It is true that it will be difficult to book kitnets online. But you can always talk to the agents or owners
to reserve for you and you can rent it once you are here.

book any “pousada” or hotel for initial days.

2. Also what is difference between 3,000 or 3.000 in food prices, some websites say 3,000 for drink some
say 3.000 confusing

=> In brazil decimal separator is comma “,” instead of dot “.” . Hence websites in Portuguese language
may display 3,00 instead of 3.00

3. Initial expenses, University mentioned to bring at least 1,000. Whereas some accommodation
mentioned 9.00 real for a month with three month security, it means 2700 real. Again I am confused with .

And ,

And if 2700 then we must bring at least 5000 real for first month?
=> University gives you an estimate for living expenses apart from rent. It doesn’t include the expenses
for Residence permit etc also. So i guess coming here with 5000 reais will be a safe choice.

But it again is your personal decision.

4. What is medical insurance while enrollment?

=> I don’t have much idea about the medical insurance. But I think the health insurance requirement for
VISA should be ale to cover it. You can opt for a travel insurance with healt insurance benefit for 2-3
months. Then once you are here, you can decide if you want to buy an insurance here in brasil if
necessary.

5-What are the PhD degree requirements (eg. how many course works/credits, how many publications.)?
16 credits, 1 conference and 1 international Journal with high impact factor

16 credits means 4 classes (of 4hr/week each) usually completed during

the first year or 1.5year (ie. 1 class first semester, 2 classes
second semester, and 1 third semester)

Publication requirements are less stringent (i.e. the journal

publication does not need to be confirmed at defense time, only
submission is sufficient) but in any case, in practice, you will be
publishing in high quality venues.

I can’t stress more to look at this link below:

http://www.internationaloffice.unicamp.br/english/international-students/
This site is specifically available for international students coming to unicamp. Hence the details here are
mostly up to date. As it caters to the exchange students, some of the details may not be for you all. But
still it is a good point to start.
