Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Education is an important mean by which an organized society achieves stability,

financial security, and allows self dependency. Through the process of education,

we are able to shape a better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights,

laws, and regulations.

Education is designed to guide them in learning a culture, molding their behaviour in

the ways of adulthood, and directing them toward their eventual role in society.

Education frequently takes under the guidance of educators.

However, education in the Philippines suddenly stopped by an unprecedented

occurrence of the initial stage of a global pandemic known as the Novel Corona

Virus 2019 (COVID-19). The first suspected case in the Philippines was investigated

on January 22, 2020, and 633 suspected cases were reported as of March 1, 2020.

On March 16, 2020, Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte issued Proclamation

No. 929 which: (a declared the whole Philippines under a State of Calamity for a

period of six (6) months from March 16, 2020; and (b) imposed an Enhanced

Community Quarantine (ECQ) throughout the island of Luzon from 12:00am of

March 17, 2020 to 12:00 am of April 13, 2020.

The enhanced community quarantine in Luzon is a series of stay-at-home orders

and the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) on the

island of Luzon and it's associated islands. Wherein,. all schools in all levels are
temporarily prohibited to conduct classes and activities until April 14, 2020.

However, the increase of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines becomes very alarming

that the government and the Department of Education decided to adapt to the new

blended learning as public schools were set to resume it's classes nationwide on

October 5, 2020. Despite the calls for an academic freeze due to the corona virus

outbreak, the Department of Education still believes that education should not be

compromised.

According to Department of Secretary Leonor Briones, “Education cannot wait". In

order to maintain the education of millions of Filipino students, the government

implemented a distance learning approach.

Distance learning, also known as correspondence education or home study, is a

form of education where there is little or no face-to-face interaction between

students and their instructors. it was also the most preferred learning system of

majority of parents/guardians.

The process of this learning will start from the Department of Education whom will

provide and distribute the self learning modules to every students every week thru

their respective schools. Thru this, the students will have an ample time to study

and assess the modules before the start of weekly class.

With this being said, the researcher aims to identify the advantages/ disadvantages

of the new way of learning which is called modular distance learning also the effect

of this method to the academic performances of the students.

Statement of the Problem


The purpose of this research study is to identify the Impacts of Modular
Distance Learning to the Grade 12-STEM students of Teodoro Hernaez National High
School CY 2020-2021 on their Academic Performances.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the student-respondents as to:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender;

1.3 Location;

1.4 Studying Hours?

2. What are the effects of modular distance learning to the academic


performances of Grade 12-STEM students CY 2020-2021?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the impacts of modular learning

on the academic performances of the students?

Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted to determine the Impacts of Modular Distance

Learning on the Academic Performances of the Students.

It was conducted among the selected 10 student-respondents from Grade 12-

STEM SY 2020-2021 students of Teodoro Hernaez National High School, Sabuanan,

Sta Lucia, Ilocos Sur.

This research distributed questionnaires and retrieved them later on, as an

instrument used in the data gathering process.


Significance of the Study

Modular distance learning is one of the other options for the education of

the students by the Department of Education. Majority of the students in the

Philippines chooses modular learning especially in remote areas.

The study focuses on the impacts of modular distance learning of Grade

12-STEM students in Teodoro Hernaez National High School S.Y 2020-2021.

The result of this study will valuable to the following:

To the students, this will provide them knowledge about the advantages

and disadvantages of modular learning to their academic performances.

To the school administrators, the result of this study may provide

information and may serve as a basis to make improvement in the process of

modular learning.

To the teachers, the finding of this study may help them adjust the

modular learning delivered to the students.

To the parents, this study may nform them on the possible effects of the

modular learning to the academic performances of their children.

To the future researchers, this study will serve as a basis for related

topics as well as additional sources of inputs.

A continuation of this study may be done to fill the gaps of this

research that may result to an improved modular learning.


Operational Definition Of Terms

For easier understanding of the study, the following words and phrases

are herby defined operationally.

Academic Performances. It refers to the extent to which a student,

teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals.

Advantages. It refers to the condition or circumstance that puts one in

a favorable or superior position.

Disadvantages. It is unfavorable circumstance or condition that reduces

the chances of success or effectiveness.

Modular Learning. It is a form of distance learning that uses Self-

Learning Modules (SLM) based on the most essential learning competencies

(MELCS) provided by DepEd.

Respondents. It is a person who replies to something, especially one

supplying information for a survey or questionnaire or responding to an

advertisement.
